Born in Los Angeles to Orville Eugene, Sr. and Harriette Borden Hogan, Gene lived an adventurous and accomplished life defined by curiosity, craftsmanship, and courage. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sirima Hogan (2024), and by previous spouses Carol Anderson Hogan Hadford (2011) and Marjorie Tite Hogan (2020).
Gene is survived by his sons Brian Patrick Hogan and daughter-in-law Louise of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Michael Kelly Hogan and his wife Stacey of Orlando, Florida. He was the grandfather of Melody and Alice of California and Mollyanne and Peter of Pennsylvania, and uncle of Tracey Hogan (South Dakota) and Tom Tate (California). He was also preceded in death by his half-siblings Gary Patrick “Pat” Hogan of the Dominican Republic in 2000 and Diane Marie Hogan Tate Squires of Newport Beach, California in 2009, and in 1994 by his grandson, Jedidiah Patrick Hogan of Erdenet, Mongolia.
After graduating high school, Gene served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict as a communications and electronics specialist in Japan. His lifelong entrepreneurial spirit led him through a colorful career—founder of The Federated Group, owner of The Audio Mart in Burbank, California, and later Hogan Dental Lab in Huntington Beach. He also spent years abroad in Germany engaged in import-export ventures, combining business acumen with his love of world travel.
Gene was a self-taught craftsman whose fine woodworking graced his Huntington Beach home. His fascination with ancient Egypt inspired him to build an entire living room modeled on the treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb—an homage to a civilization he admired deeply. A true adventurer, Gene cruised the Nile, piloted his own airplanes, and found joy in horseback riding, earning ribbons with his prize-winning American Saddlebred, Hart of the Town (“Bookey”). In later years, his loyal cat Romeo was his constant companion.
Those who knew Gene remember him as fiercely independent, endlessly inventive, a charming and hilarious conversationalist — always dreaming of the next great project or destination.
Over the past several years, Gene suffered from advancing dementia. His son, Brian, moved him from Huntington Beach to Fayetteville, AR in July 2024 and he had wonderful and loving care from staff at Ciel Adult Living and Ciel Memory Care. He absolutely loved his caregivers from Promise Home Health Care (especially Ashley and Lexie), and all the
wonderful folks at Circle of Life Hospice who made his final months so comfortable. He was enjoying the activities at Ciel and outings with Brian and Louise up until his final week when a fall initiated the end. Gene left this life peacefully.
