Sandra Jane Anderson

Sandra was born March 6, 1961, in Cheverly, Maryland, the daughter of Harold and Patricia King. She spent her earliest years in Maryland before the King family moved to Massachusetts when Sandra was in the first grade. She grew up there with her brothers and sisters, Judy, Debbie, Mike and David, and graduated from Lincoln Sudbury High School in 1979. She proudly carried a patriot’s spirit and a Massachusetts accent throughout her entire life.

Sandra was smart, independent, adventurous and funny from the beginning. She was active in Girl Scouts, the Lincoln Sudbury Drama Club, and a proud member of Boy Scout Explorer Post #2. She was a fierce and vocal protector of her younger brothers, and even at a young age could be counted upon to carry her own weight.

Sandra’s adventurous spirit changed the course of her life in the summer of 1979, when she traveled to northern Minnesota to work at the Boy Scouts of America’s Northern Tier High Adventure wilderness canoe base. There she met a long-haired, bearded young canoe guide from Kansas named Darren Anderson.

Later that year, Sandra’s family welcomed Darren in Aberdeen, Maryland, for Thanksgiving. By then the long hair and beard were gone and the wilderness guide had become a clean-shaven Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Their friendship grew into love. On July 16, 1983, Sandra and Darren were married in a military wedding at the Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis.

For the next 43 years they were husband and wife, best friends, and partners in adventure.

Life with a Navy submariner meant that Sandra quickly learned that marriage to Darren also meant marriage to the Navy. Navy life took Sandra and Darren from Orlando, Florida, to Saratoga Springs, New York, New London, Connecticut, and Charleston, South Carolina, as Darren trained and served aboard submarines during the Cold War. Through long deployments and uncertainty, Sandra supported Darren, his shipmates, and their families with the strength, warmth and good humor that were uniquely hers.

Sandra brought that same determination to her own education and career. She earned a degree in communications from the University of Massachusetts and became an award winning video producer, with a passion for telling the stories of World War II and the veterans who fought it.

As the video production industry evolved, Sandra chose a new direction and reinvented herself professionally. She returned to school and entered the highly technical field of fire protection, tackling coursework in mathematics, physics, fluid mechanics and fire protection systems. She worked in both fire sprinkler and fire alarm system design, building an entirely new career for herself that included an assignment in Saudi Arabia.

Sandra and Darren eventually settled for many years in Maryland, including Havre de Grace and Baltimore. Sandra was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Baltimore, where she served the church in lay worship, audiovisual ministry and on the property committee.

But Sandra was happiest when an adventure was involved.

She and Darren returned to the wilderness for canoe trips in the Adirondack Park in New York. They skied the mountains of Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. They bicycled and hiked. They traveled to England, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Greece and other destinations overseas, cruised Alaska and the eastern Mediterranean, and explored America in “Bubbles,” their restored 1977 GMC motorhome.

Sandra also loved Cape Cod and treasured time at their cottage there. Later, she and Darren made their home in Rogers, Arkansas, where Sandra came to love the beauty of the Ozark Mountains and the kindness of their adopted community.

And then there was Disney. Sandra was an unapologetic Disney enthusiast who made many trips to Walt Disney World and never outgrew the magic.

Yet for all those destinations, Sandra loved simply sitting beside Darren on the shore of just about any body of water, enjoying the quiet and just being with her guy.

Family remained at the center of Sandra’s life. She was a loving sister, a devoted wife and a wonderfully fun aunt to generations of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She stayed close to her brothers and sisters throughout her life, and had a unique relationship with every one of them.

Sandra faced her greatest challenge during the final years of her life when she developed interstitial lung disease. For more than three years, she fought a difficult disease with extraordinary courage and determination. She sought the best care available, endured the setbacks, and kept fighting.

Sandra lost that battle on Sunday, August 9, 2026. She was 65.

Her illness may have limited what Sandra could do near the end of her life, but it never defined who she was. She was still the adventurous Girl Scout, the young woman who headed into the Minnesota wilderness, the protective big sister, the Navy wife, the video producer, the fire protection professional, the church volunteer, the skier, canoeist, traveler and Disney enthusiast. She was still the woman with the quick wit and unmistakable laugh who believed she could figure things out.

And to Darren, she was still the young woman he met at a canoe base in the Minnesota wilderness 47 summers ago. She was his best friend, his partner in every adventure, and the love of his life.

Sandra’s Christian faith was at the center of her life. She was a devoted follower of Christ and believed deeply in God’s grace. Her faith, along with the love of Darren and her family, sustained her throughout her life and gave her strength during her illness. Those who loved Sandra take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace in Heaven with her Savior.
