

Barbara Camp McElyea, aged 88, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022. She was born June 26, 1933 in Jonesboro, Georgia, the daughter of the late Robert Henry Camp, Sr. and Geneva Barronton Camp. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Martin McElyea, on February 5, 2020.
Barbara graduated from Jonesboro High School and graduated from Berry College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She and Martin were married on the Berry campus on October 5, 1955.
Before having children, Barbara was dietician at Battey Hospital. She later was a pre-school teacher at First Baptist Church of Rome, and for many years was the Food Services Director for Floyd County Schools.
Barbara was an accomplished seamstress and baker. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rome, where she sang in the choir, played piano for children’s choirs, and served in many other areas. She was active in Berry College alumni activities and was a long-time volunteer at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Barbara is survived by her children and grandchildren: Ellen McElyea and her husband Bobby Dyer; Tracy and Doss and her husband Jamie; son David McElyea; grandchildren William Dyer and his wife Catherine, Abby Doss, Wright Dyer, Georgia Doss and Natalie Doss; brother Henry Camp and his wife Julie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berry College or First Baptist Church of Rome.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 13th at 2:30pm at Rome First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 at the church.
