Mr. Baker was born on September 3, 1940, in Floyd Co., the son of the late James H. Baker and Sara Couch West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Baker, on December 31, 2011. He served in the U. S. Army and Reserves from 1957-65.
Mr. Baker was a highway construction superintendant with Ledbetter Paving, C. W. Matthews Paving and Dalton Paving. He was then employed by the U. S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. He was a member of the Silver Creek Presbyterian Church, the Rome Shrine Club, the Coosa Masonic Lodge No. 622 F & AM, and an honorary member of the Shannon Masonic Lodge No. 100 F & AM.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lovell Baker, to whom he was married February 28, 1961; two children, Donald Jeffrey Baker (Lisa), Calhoun, and Jay Lane Baker (Tracey), Cartersville; two grandchildren, Christopher and Taylor Baker, Calhoun; and two nieces, Donna Morris, Cartersville, and Angie Swann, Rome.
A celebration of life service was held Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Foley officiating.
The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, from 1 until 2 p.m.
