Candler N. Barton

Candler Noel Barton “flew away” Sunday morning, January 15, 2012 at 6:30 AM at his home in Ocala, FL. He was 95 years young. Mr. Barton was born December 10, 1916 in Cave Spring, GA, son of the late Joseph and Pearl Barton. He graduated from Cave Spring High School and attended West Georgia College where he played center field for the Wet Georgia Braves. He was a great lover of music and as a young man, sang tenor with the Wilkins Gospel Quartet. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barton was preceded in death by his sisters, Gwendolyn Barton Wagner and Sara Jane Barton Cook and his brothers, Edgar Lyle Barton and Arnold O. Barton. Mr. Barton gave 44 months in service to his country as a corporal in the U. S. Army and was deployed to the Pacific Theatre including time in Sai Pan and Pearl Harbor. After the war, he returned home to Rome, Georgia where he met and married his lovely wife of 55 years, Mary Emma Pitts Barton. Together they moved to Miami, Florida in 1958 where they raised their six children. In 1975 they returned to North Georgia where Candler farmed and engaged in the antique business, a hobby that he loved. He was an avid collector of beautiful art, glassware, and sculpture. In 2010 Candler and his wife, Mary, moved to Ocala, Florida. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Emma Pitts Barton; six children, Sylvia Richardson and husband Kurt of Oakland, TN, Richard Barton and wife Marlee of Denver, CO, Anita Henderson and husband Dan of Ocala, FL, Ginger Tousseau and husband Dave of Leavenworth, KS, Bobby Barton of Rome, GA and Sanford Barton and wife Paula of Denver, CO; thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. A long time member of Second Avenue United Methodist Church, Candler will return there with his family and friends for funeral services on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Tom McElroy officiating. Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Daniel’s Funeral Home
