
Mrs. Penn was born on January 3, 1909, in Taylor Co., GA, the daughter of the late Albert Avery Vann and Maggie Bussey Vann. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie Vann Culpepper, and two brothers, J. B. Vann and Roscoe Vann.
Mrs. Penn was the last living graduate of the Harbin School of Nursing in 1929. As a registered nurse, she worked at McCall Hospital, and Battey State Hospital for 23 years before retiring in 1974. She also worked in public health nursing, and was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class.
Survivors include one son, John D. Penn, Jr., and his wife, Alice, Hoschton, GA; two grandchildren, Trey Penn, Orange Park, FL, and Patricia Rutledge, and her husband, Tommy, Grayson, GA; a great grandson, Jeremy Rutledge; and “kissing” cousins, Lola Barnes and Johnny Edwards.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Dr. Floyd Roebuck, Dr. Joel Snider and Rev. Keith Reaves officiating. The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, from 5:30 until 7 p.m. A private interment was held Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Northview Cemetery in Cedartown.
