
Mr. Culberson was born January 19, 1916 in Bartow County, son of the late Clifford and Eva Mathis Culberson, one of eight children. In addition to his parents, Mr. Culberson was preceded in death by a daughter, Molly Hector; brothers, Leon Culberson, J. M. Culberson, and Kenneth Culberson and a sister, Marjorie Lam.
Mr. Culberson was a 1938 graduate of Darlington School where he was Captain of the football team and member of the Honor Council. He graduated from University of Chattanooga where he lettered for three years in football and track. He received his Master of Education degree from Mercer University. Mr. Culberson was a member of Iota Lambda Sigma and Professional Industrial Education fraternities.
Mr. Culberson served as Past President of the Georgia Association of Local Vocational Administrators. He taught and coached in Rome and Floyd County school systems, and was a member of the NW Georgia Football Officials Association for 20 years. As Director of Rome Vocational School, Mr. Culberson assisted in planning and developing Coosa Valley Tech in 1962, and was the first Director of Coosa Valley Tech, now known as Coosa Valley Technical College. Mr. Culberson was also a past member of the technical committee of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and a past member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia Vocational Education Association.
Mr. Culberson was a member of First Baptist Church of Rome and the Johnny Nelms Sunday School Class as well as a member of the Coosa Country Club. During WW II, Mr. Culberson served in the Army in the Pacific Theatre.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hopkins Culberson, to whom he was married February 14, 1947; son, Cliff Culberson and wife Anne, of Atlanta; 2 grandchildren, Blake Culberson and Hill Coyle; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Patti Yoder and Camilla Culberson; and a brother, Dennis Culberson.
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Friday, September 21, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Rome with Dr. Joel Snider officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 PM until 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Foundation, P. O. Box 1189, Rome, Georgia 30162-1189.
