
A native of Manchester, GA, she was born on May 10, 1927, the daughter of the late Aileen C. (Crosswell) and Irby Cook. Preceding her in death were three infant children, Katherine Aileen Hortman, Virginia Ann Hortman and John Cleveland Hortman and an infant grandson, Nelson Hortman Meeker.
Mrs. Hortman graduated from Bessie Tift College with a double major in History and Biology.
In 1952, she married Hobart Cleveland Hortman, Jr., MD and moved to Rome. Mrs. Hortman was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Rome where she actively served during her lifetime. She was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class, a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, President of the Women of the Church, Manager of the Doris White Missionary Apartment, a member of the Round Table Book Group, the History Committee, the Property Committee, the Homebound Visitation Committee and volunteer at the Floyd County Baptist Association.
Mrs. Hortman served as President of the Junior Service League of Rome and was honored as the Sustainer of the Year. She was a Trustee of Darlington and Thornwood Schools, charter member of CoVestors, member of DAR, Mountain View Garden Club and a delegate to the Georgia Baptist Heritage Council. Mrs. Hortman was a longtime volunteer for the Floyd Medical Center and a member of the Floyd County Medical Auxilary.
She was dedicated to her family, enjoyed her friends, entertaining, bridge, sewing and needlework. Mrs. Hortman was an avid reader and especially enjoyed travelling. She was a devoted member of a supper club of dear friends for 58 years.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Dr. Hobart Cleveland Hortman, Jr.; a daughter-- Cynthia Jane Hortman Meeker (George) of Troy, Ohio; two sons-- Robert Patterson Hortman, DMD (Susan) and David Crosswell Hortman (Ann) both of Rome; eight grandchildren-- Katherine Meeker Nalley (Slater), George Hortman Meeker (Laura), John Hortman Meeker (Marta), Lt. Robert Patterson Hortman, Jr. (Nancy), William Jeffreys Hortman, Jane McNair Hortman, Elizabeth Aileen Hortman and Katherine Lanier Hortman; four great-grandchildren-- Slater, Sanders and Crosswell Nalley and John Meeker. Mrs. Hortman is also survived by a brother William C. Cook (Harriett) of Griffin, GA and a special cousin Bobbie Cranford Cook (Fred) of Louisville, KY.
A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will follow at the First Baptist Church on Thursday, August 25 at 2pm with Dr. Joel Snider and Dr. Floyd Roebuck officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will include Albert C. Briley, Robert M. Cates, MD, Robert F. Horsley, James B. Milner, George W. Reynolds, I. Harold Storey and J. Thomas Watters, Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 19 Rockridge Road on Wednesday, August 24, 4-7pm.
