Daniel Craig Castor

A native of Kannapolis, NC, Dan was born on June 3, 1934, the son of the late Charles B. Castor and Alma K. Castor. He was a 1952 graduate of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. Following graduation, Dan was employed by Cannon Mills as a loom fixer before joining the US Navy. He served from 1955 to 1959 as an electrician on the USS Newport News CA 148, 6th fleet, receiving a commendation for excellent work. After completion of his naval tour, he married Shirley Keaton on April 8, 1961. Dan attended Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, NC, and Clemson University where he received a BS degree in electrical engineering in 1965. He was employed by Georgia Power Company as an electrical engineer in Athens, Gainesville, Toccoa, Rome, and Atlanta, retiring in 1989. He was a former member of the Gainesville Jaycees, the Toccoa Lions Club, and the Rome Noon Optimist Club. An avid golfer, Dan won trophies in several local tournaments. He was also an amateur radio operator and a former volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Dan was a member and former trustee of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Shirley Keaton Castor of Rome; a daughter, Kimberly Castor Guthrie and her husband Roger, one granddaughter, Sarah Lynn Guthrie, and one grandson , David Castor Guthrie, all of Greenville, SC; a brother, Charles Castor and his wife Janice, Greenville, SC; two sisters, Lorna Ensley Winslett, Easley, SC, and Miriam Castor, Kannapolis, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Meta Rose Simmons and Nina Hattaway, preceded him in death.

The funeral service was held on Monday, April 7, at 2:00 P.M. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Greg Lund officiating. Following the service, the family received friends in the church's West Center. Interment will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Bethany Cemetery, Charleston SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1941 Shorter Avenue, Rome, GA 3065.
