Doris Jones Willingham Dodd Higgins, 89, of Rome, GA died December 19, 2013 at her residence. She was born in Cherokee County, GA as the daughter of the late Florence L. Hasty and William G. Jones. She worked as a beautician for a number of years before working as a teller at First National Bank of Rome for 21 years before retiring. She was active in her church and community. She was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years before becoming a member of First Baptist Church in her later years. She was a volunteer as a Pink Lady at Floyd Hospital in the early 1970s and served in multiple leadership positions in her church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law the Rev. Leonard Chandler Willingham and Martha Suddreth Willingham of Rome, GA; three stepsons and their spouses, Joseph Bowdoin Dodd, Jr. and Louise Cousins Dodd of Big Canoe, GA , Charles Howard Higgins, III and Joanie Fish Higgins of Savannah, GA , Carey Thomas Higgins and Marlena Ecuyer Higgins of Marietta, GA; Three grandchildren, Jennifer Willingham Bagby and Wright Williams (Tripp) Bagby III, Leonard Chandler Willingham, Jr., Johanna Willingham Guevin and Tristan James Guevin; two great grandchildren Wright Williams Bagby IV and Chandler Harrison Bagby; eight step-grandchildren; niece Betty Zane Morris; niece-in-law Janice Jones; great-nephews William Lee Morris, Jr. and James David Morris; eight step-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by spouses, James H. Willingham, J. Bowdoin Dodd, and Charles H. Higgins, Jr., three siblings, Ruby Rayburn and her spouse Melvin Rayburn,
Alice Abercrombie and her spouse Everett Abercrombie, brother, J. Culver Jones and his spouse Bertha Hilton Jones, nephew James Edward Jones, nephew-in-law William Lee Morris.
The memorial service will be at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church Rome. The family will great friends from 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday, December 22 at Daniel’s Funeral Home and immediately following the memorial service in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church. Pallbearers will include grandson, grandsons-in-law, step-grandson, great nephews. Members of the Joy Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church Rome will serve as honorary pallbearers.
