
Mrs. Hayes was born in Calhoun, GA, on November 7, 1906, the daughter of the late David Benton and Mary Bottoms Barrett. On December 24, 1927, she married Gordon Autrell Hayes who preceded her in death in March, 1970. Mrs. Hayes moved to Shannon, GA, in 1929 to work for Brighton Mills, where she worked until retiring in 1971. At that time she started babysitting in her home and helped raise some remarkable children she dearly loved.
Mrs. Hayes was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Shannon where for many years she was leader of the G.A.s. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle Raines, Iola Anderson and Beulah Shugart, and three brothers, Andy Barrett, Willie Barrett and Truman David Barrett.
Survivors include her nieces, Frances Raines, Rome, Ethelene Wright, Marietta, and Glenda Bull, Evans, GA; one nephew, Donald Raines, Indianapolis, IN; 13 great nieces, four great nephews; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Allie Bea Sechrest, Martinez, GA.
A celebration of her life was held Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home, Rome, with the Rev. Doug Ballard and the Rev. Tony Christie officiating. Kevin Mitchell will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in the East View Cemetery, Rome.
The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 10 until 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Shannon First Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.
The family would like to thank the staff of Winthrop Manor who took great care of her over the past nine years as well as all who visited her during this time.
