
Mr. Maddox was born in Rome on Oct. 30, 1942, the son of the late John W. Maddox, Sr., and Leone Brooks Maddox Sheffield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lee Maddox Wise. He was a graduate of Shorter College and was a member of the track Hall of Fame.
John was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Wednesday Men’s Bible Study. After retirement, he remained a director of Suntrust Bank and was a former board member and current advisory board member of the Family Resource Center. He was a member of the Rome Exchange Club and served as president of the Oaks Association for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Chumley Maddox, to whom he was married Sept. 1, 1962; one daughter, Johnna Lynn Maddox, Alpharetta; one son, John W. Maddox, III, and his wife, Christine, Belgium; three grandchildren, John W. Maddox, IV, Romain Maddox and Emma France Maddox; one brother, Brooks Maddox, and sister-in-law, Douglas Maddox, Rome; brother-in-law, Dennis Chumley, and his wife, Jane, Rome; and seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Chadwick officiating. A private interment was held following the memorial service.
The family received friends on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. in the King Hall of the First Presbyterian Church.
