Mr. Major was born in Danburg, Wilkes County, GA on October 8, 1926. He was the son of the late John Allen Major and Nell Walton Major. He attended North Georgia College in 1943-44. After serving two years in the US Navy during WWII, he returned to North Georgia College and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration. He attended graduate school at the University of Georgia and was employed by General Electric Co. in 1950 and retired in 1986 from the Medium Transformer Dept. in Rome. While employed at General Electric he served on the Board of Directors of General Electric Credit Union. After retirement he was a Financial Counselor with the Larry Burkett Ministry and Business Manager for the Ministries of Love, Inc. Mr. Major was also an active member of West Rome United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Goddard Major, of Rome; Daughter Lee Ann Alexander and her husband Ron of Lexington, SC; two sons, Allen Major and his wife Susan of Acworth, GA; and Mark Major and his wife Jenny of Bishop, GA. Also surviving are six grandchildren; Caroline (New York, NY) and Grant Alexander (Lexington, SC,), Nick (Athens, GA.) and Katie Major (Garden City, NY), Chase and John Major (Bishop, GA).
A memorial service was conducted Wednesday April 16, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at West Rome United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary McWhorter and Rev. Les Connell officiating. The family received friends at the church from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday April 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Danburg Baptist Church Cemetery in Danburg, GA. (Tignall, GA. community) with Rev. Ficklin Guin officiating. Much appreciation goes to the staff of Heyman Hospice and all the caregivers who provided loving care for Mr. Major over the past few months. Special thanks also goes to Barbara Davis (Ministries of Love, Inc.), who coordinated the funeral plans, the West Rome United Methodist Church family and Chapter AO P.E.O. who have provided love and support.
