John Rule Martens, Sr.

John Rule Martens, Sr. 58, passed away suddenly on February 2, 2018. John was a native of Rome and with only a short stint in Stockbridge with his beloved wife, Dawn, had returned to his hometown residing in the family home that he affectionately referred to as Dogwood Hill in the Horseleg Estates Community.

John was the son of Dr. Lester J. Martens, and Barbara Castetter Martens who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was one grandchild, Nathan, and a great grandchild. John will be missed by many friends and all those that he dearly loved including his wife Dawn A. Martens, son John Rule Martens, Jr., Daughters Ashley Whittier, and Emily Neal (C.J.), nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren with a third on the way. He is also survived by a brother, sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

John retired as a Licensed Professional Counselor and was enjoying life as an author and photographer. He also enjoyed traveling and had recently returned from a trip to Alaska with Dawn. His favorite place was Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains.

Daniels Funeral Home in Rome will host visitation for family and friends on February 17 at 12:00 pm and a celebration of life will follow in the chapel at 2:00 pm.

Interment will follow at a later time. In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to the American Heart Association or Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.
