Dr. Cauthen was born in Haralson Co. September 25, 1924, the son of the late
Walter W. Cauthen and Betsy Tanner Cauthen. He graduated from Tallapoosa High
School in 1941, and from 1941-45 attended West Georgia College and the US Navy
DCS at Mercer University and Cornell University. He was an ensign on an LST
traversing the Panama canal on the way to the Pacific theater when the war ended.
He attended the Medical College of Georgia, graduating May, 1950, and completed
residency training in Anesthesiology at Emory Hospital in 1955.
Dr. Cauthen moved to Rome in 1955 and served as chief of anesthesiology at Floyd
Hospital. He later, along with other physicians in the area, was instrumental in
bringing Redmond Park Hospital to Rome, and served on its first Board of Directors.
He retired from active practice in 1989 after 34 years.
He married Barbara Louise Webb on December 22, 1948, and is survived by their
sons, Randy and wife Gena, Robert and wife Deborah, David and wife Katie, and
daughter Lynn. In addition to his children, survivors include grandchildren Anna
Claire Cauthen Abbas, Hampton Cauthen, and Cora Cauthen Warren, and great
grandchildren Chase and Matthew Warren. He is preceded in death by grandson
Matthew Cauthen. He married Mary Louise Jones in November 1971, deceased
2004, and married Bonnie Thompson Price in June 2006, deceased 2009.
In his later years, Dr. Cauthen authored "The Transients: Five Generations of a
Southern Family," travelled, and enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. He
was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1956, and a member, treasurer, and
president of the Scrap Iron Bible Class, and then the Fidelis Class where he served as
vice-president.
The funeral service was held Saturday June 25, 2016 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist
Church with Dr. Floyd Roebuck officiating. Interment followed at Oaknoll Memorial
Gardens.
The family received friends at Daniel's Funeral Home on Friday, June 24, 2016,
from 6 until 8 p.m.
