Lucian lived there until he was approximately 3 years old when his parents moved to Old Hickory, TN. He attended grammar school and high school at the DuPont public schools. After he got out of school, he did just about everything to make a living.
Right after Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941, Lucian joined the United States Marine Corps. He was sent to Parris Island for boot camp. After he finished boot camp, he was sent to Pensacola, FL for approximately 3 months. He was then sent to New River, NC (now Camp Lejune) where the third Marine Division was being formed. In Aug. 1942 his outfit was sent to the South Pacific where he served approximately two and a half years.
After returning to the states, he met Mary Lynn McMullan, who was from Rome, GA. After going together for a few months, they were married on June 17, 1945 while he was still in the Marine Corps. When he was discharged on Oct. 15, 1945, they settled in Rome where her parents lived and owned Macks Dept. Store. Lucian worked at Macks from Oct. 1945 until the store closed on July 31, 1990.
He was the father of six children: Lucia Lemmings and the late Morris Lemmings, Knoxville, TN; Mike and Sara Oldham, Commerce, GA; Barbara and Pete Peyton, Calhoun, GA; James Oldham, Rome; Carolyn and Bert Hunt, Rome; and Andrew and Denise Oldham, Rome and step-sons, Mark and Angie Mull, Rome and Keith and Darci Mull, Naples, FL. Mr. Oldham had 12 grandchildren: Morris Lemmings, Kimberly Stetson, Jason Oldham, Jessica Pach, Tim Peyton, Jeff Oldham, Melissa Guerrero, JoAnna Gutierrez, Chad Hunt, Andrea Walraven, Haley Cooper, and Luke Mull and 17 great-grandchildren. Mr. Oldham’s sisters are Mai Hampton and Joyce Jean Scoggins Anderson, both of Goodlettsville, TN and the late Geneva Brownfield of Jacksonville, FL.
After Mary Lynn’s death in Sept. 1991, Lucian married Helen Anne Autry Mull on May 13, 1993. They have been married for almost 19 years and she survives him in death. Lucian is a past commander of Shanklin Attaway Post 5 American Legion where he has been a member since Feb. 1946. He is a past President of the Rome Lions Club where he served for many years. He served on the City Commission for ten years and he also served in the Georgia House of Representatives for four years. He was a member of the Vitality Center and he and Helen traveled with the River City Ramblers. Mr. Oldham was a member of West Rome Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for many years.
He has asked that Bro. Bob Skelton preach his funeral and he asked that Bro. Skelton preach a sermon on sin. Not too many preachers today will get in the pulpit and preach on sin. They are afraid they might step on someone’s toe. The bible is mostly about two things, love and sin, so why are preachers afraid to preach about sin? Everyone is welcome to come whether you knew Lucian or not.
Daniel’s Funeral Home will have the remains of Lucian. He has asked that the funeral home get enough men to serve as pallbearers because what few friends he has are just plain too old to lift anything. The service will be held at Daniel’s Chapel. If you are not ready to meet your Lord and Savior, you had better get ready because life is short.
Since they will not be hearing from me anymore, I hope the Rome News will not edit this obituary and run a rebuttal.

Glenn Clonts officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
