Mrs. Bishop was born on July 16, 1934, in Ridgeland, South Carolina, daughter of the late Isaiah and Eulalia Floyd. In 1955, she earned her nursing degree from the Medical College of South Carolina School of Nursing in Charleston, SC and practiced as a registered nurse at the Medical College Hospital. While in Charleston, she met and married the love of her life and husband of 55 years, the late (2013) James (Jim) A. Bishop, Jr. who was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base as a lieutenant. They soon moved to Georgia where Jim began a long career with Georgia Power Company. It was in Georgia where she gave birth to and raised her three children while also continuing her nursing career. After living in multiple locations around Georgia including Atlanta, Columbus, Jonesboro, and Macon, the family settled permanently in Rome in 1969. She was able to blend her roles as a nurturing wife and mother with a career in nursing at Floyd Medical Center before retiring in 1984.
She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome and more recently a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome. She was a member of the Coosa Country Club for decades and an active benefactor to many local charities around Rome including the Exchange Club Family Resource Center. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, traveling, decorating, shopping, and entertaining, but her passion was playing bridge. She was well known for her elegant hosting skills which she loved to utilize often for parties and gatherings. Above all, she prioritized making her home a loving, Christian, family-oriented environment.
She is survived by her children, son James, III (Thay), son Ed (Liz), daughter Gigi (Guy Binion), her grandchildren Elise Braden Baswell (Brandon), Emily Braden, Anthony and Michael Bishop, Kelley Binion Gibson (Jonathan), Lindsey and Allison Binion, and great grandchildren Kayla and Kourtney Gibson, and multiple nieces and a nephew.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home, 901 E. Second Avenue on Thursday, November 20th beginning at 1:30 pm followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 pm in the Chapel at Daniel’s.
Flowers are welcomed, or in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Exchange Club Family Resource Center of Rome, 202 East Third Avenue, P.O. Box 168, Rome, GA 30161.
