She was born on May 24, 1938 to the late Claude Battey Stillwell and Lyndall Gillespie Stillwell.
She is survived by her husband Jerry Mose Dunwoody, her son Richard Lee Dunwoody (Susan, grandson Grant) of Rome, and her daughter Alison Diane Dunwoody, also of Rome. She was preceded in death by her son, Moses Wright Dunwoody II. She is survived by her sisters, Suzy Copeland (Lewis) of Rome, and Lynn Mashburn (Bobby) of Cumming, GA.
Madeline was a 1956 graduate of Rome High School. She participated in many school activities. She was a member of the Rome High Marching Band and the Drum and Bugle Corp. She was also a varsity basketball cheerleader. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics, which became her passion in life. Madeline was also an avid musician. She played the piano and the organ.
Madeline was a long time member of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, which she loved dearly. She was the chairperson of Loaves and Fishes, a member of the Altar Guild and enjoyed arranging flowers. Madeline worked with the soup kitchen, and loved everyone in her church family.
She was an accomplished seamstress, a gourmet cook, and the consummate hostess. One of her joys in life was baking, especially cinnamon buns. In her lifetime, she baked countless numbers of cinnamon buns, most of which were given to friends, charities and other causes. Madeline’s creative spirit lead her to paint watercolors of flowers. People were constantly praising her for being an accomplished seamstress and a superb cook. Her reply was, “If you can read and follow directions, that’s all there is to it.”
Madeline was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed the friendship of many. She was a great ambassador to the City of Rome, and always thought Rome was a wonderful place to live. One of her favorite expressions from high school was, “Roman born and Roman bred, and when I die, I will be a Roman dead.”
Madeline’s motto in life is best expressed by her favorite Dr. Suess quote. “Be who you are and say what you feel ‘cause people who mind don’t matter, and people who matter don’t mind”.
The memorial service celebrating Madeline’s life is Wednesday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church with a reception to follow in Daniel Hall. The family is also receiving friends at home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Capital Fund, 101 E 4th Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
