
Mrs. Martha H. Cherry, age 95, of Budd Terrace 1833 Clifton Rd. Wesley Woods Campus, Atlanta, GA. formerly of Rome, passed away Tuesday February 8, 2011. Mrs. Cherry was born in White Plains, Georgia on August 23, 1914. She was a twin, the youngest of four children born to the late John Robert and Lucy Elizabeth Moore Hilsman. She graduated from White Plains High School and continued her education in business in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Mrs. Cherry met and later married her husband Frank S. Cherry on August 11, 1937 while he was teaching in White Plains. Mrs. Cherry was a student of his when she was younger. The Cherry’s lived in Cedartown and Dalton before moving to Rome in 1943. She was a member of Rome First United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She was an active Sunday school teacher when her children were young, a member of the Fannie Yeargan Sunday School Class, a member of the United Methodist Women and her passion was visiting shut-ins and nursing homes bringing cheer to fellow friends and church members. She was also a Red Cross Volunteer at Floyd Medical Center for 24 years.
Mrs. Cherry is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Cherry Conway and her husband Richard of Atlanta, and Sandra Cherry Tjaden Myers and her husband Roger of Bismarck, North Dakota. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services for Mrs. Cherry were conducted Saturday February 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm. in the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Rev. Jane Brooks officiating. The family received friends Saturday at Daniel’s from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Rome First United Methodist Church, 202 East 2nd Avenue, Rome, GA. 30161. Daniel’s Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements.
