
Mrs. Candler was born February 16, 1929 in Sylva, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Grady Talmadge Cooper and Lela Mary Howell Cooper. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Candler in 2007; five brothers; Reeves Cooper, Howell Cooper and Joseph Cooper, Dewey Cooper, Carroll Cooper, and two sisters; Pearl Sherrill and Maude Ensley.
Mrs. Candler taught Chemistry and Biology at Thornwood and Darlington for 33 years. She retired in 2004 after a total of 38 years of teaching. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Berry College and her masters from West Georgia College. She also did additional studies at Emory University, Concord College and Shorter College. Teaching was such vital part of her life. Mrs. Candler was always known for saying, “The opportunities to see students grow and discover their self-worth have been the greatest events in my teaching career. It gives me pleasure to see students blossom through the years.” One her greatest achievement’s was becoming chairwoman of the science department in 1973, a position she held until 1981. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in 1977 and Phi Kappa Phi, an education honorary society, in 1981. She received the STAR teacher award in 1978, the James Douglas Brown, Jr. Faculty Award in 1979, and the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1974 and in 1984 from the Georgia Independent Schools Association. During her retirement, she took nature pictures while traveling and made postcards from them and enjoyed sending them to friends and shut- ins. In healthier days, she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, served on various committees and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Survivors include one daughter; Karen Tucker and her husband Dr. Larry Tucker of Rome; two grandchildren, Lt. Wil Tucker and his wife Jennifer of Dayton, Ohio, and Martha Tucker of Rome.
Funeral services were held Monday September 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Dr. David Campbell and Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Interment followed at East View Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening September 29th at Trinity UMC from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. At other hours they were at their respective residences. Those serving as pallbearers were: Sam Evans, Ed Cooper, Rick Buice and Karl Lehman. The family also requested members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Special thanks were extended to the staff at Golden Living Center in Rome and Saera Care Hospice.
