Philip Henry Brewster Jr.

Phil was born on February 13, 1927, in the family home in Cedartown, Ga., to Philip Henry Brewster, Sr. and Mary Cade (Holmes) Brewster.

Because his dad was in the Army, his family moved several times. Phil grew up living in Cedartown, Atlanta, Savannah, and Augusta. He attended schools in each town but graduated from Cedartown High School at the age of 17, where he played on the CHS football team.

Phil attended Georgia Tech for his freshman year and then served briefly in the Navy at the end of World War II. Reading books about the American West piqued his interest in forestry, leading him to complete his education at Utah State University, where he earned a degree in Forestry and met his future wife of 67 years, Nannette Manning.

Phil worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Flagstaff, Arizona, from March 1950 to December 1951, marrying Nan in January 1951. In January 1952, they moved to Cedartown, where Phil accepted a position with a new paper mill opening in Rome (later known as Ga. Kraft and Inland Rome). As a forester, he established the company's land acquisition program. Phil devoted 40 years to the company, retiring in 1992 as Division Forester. Most of those years were spent in Rome, with a four-year assignment in the Birmingham, Ala., area. He and Nan lived in West Rome from 1971 until her death in 2018. Following an illness in 2022, Phil moved to assisted living at The Spires at Berry College, where he spent his remaining years.

Phil’s activities for fun included traveling and camping with Nan, hiking, wildflower identification, volunteer work, and participating in Bible Study and prayer groups.

His volunteer work included working with Rome Action Ministries and the food pantry. He was a member of the advisory board for the food pantry and the Family Resource Center for several years. He served as a Hospice volunteer and helped build six houses for Habitat for Humanity.

Phil’s most important legacy is his devotion to God, his love of studying the Bible, and his willingness to share his faith and spiritual wisdom with others. In every community where he lived, he was an active member of a local Methodist church. For the past several years, he was a faithful member of Three Rivers Church, where he touched the lives of people of all ages. Phil participated in and led numerous Bible studies and prayer groups. In November 1994, he helped establish a Men's Bible Study that continues to meet via Zoom today. During his final three years at The Spires at Berry College, he learned to play the dulcimer, sang with the Berry Pickers, and taught two Bible studies for fellow residents. He made many dear friends there and was often found outside enjoying the sunshine in his wheelchair.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Henry Brewster, Sr., and Mary Cade Brewster of Cedartown, Ga.; his brother, Joseph Holmes Brewster; his beloved wife of 67 years, Nannette Manning Brewster; and his grandson, Miles Brewster Cunningham of Atmore, Ala.

He is survived by his sister Cade Garden (Tom) of Asheville, N.C., his four children Kit Boney (Roy) of Laurel, Miss., David Brewster of Austell, Ga., Larry Brewster (Glenda) of Brentwood, Tenn., and Martha Carmack (Sellers) of Talladega, Ala. Phil has eight surviving grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Daniels Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Lanier officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at at Oak Knoll Cemetery.

The family of Mr. Brewster will receive friends and family on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 10:30 o’clock in the morning until the memorial service hour and following the memorial service from noon until 12:30 PM at Daniels Funeral Home.
