Phyllis Ann Garrett Hancock, age 87, loving wife, mother, and woman of strong faith, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024. She was born in Trafford, Alabama, on May 28, 1936 to the late Monroe Fayette Garrett and Elise Johnson Garrett.
Growing up in Warrior, Alabama, Phyllis graduated from Warrior High School in 1953. She attended the University of Alabama, where she met the love of her life, Kenneth Farrell Hancock, a graduate student. They were married in 1959, shortly after she graduated from her Medical Technology Program. After Kenneth received his PhD in Biology, they moved to Rome, Georgia, where he taught at Berry College until retirement.
Phyllis spent a few years as Medical Technologist at Floyd Hospital, then, after a stent raising her kids, spent over 30 years in the bacteriology lab at Redmond Regional Hospital. During this time, Phyllis was active in her community, serving in the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), the Mount Berry Garden Club, and the Women of the Church at First Presbyterian Church of Rome.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Kenneth Hancock; daughter, Leslie Cheryl (Michael) Sexton; son, Ashley Brian (Elizabeth) Hancock; grandchildren, Benjamin Michael Sexton, James Garrett Sexton, Kora Elyse Hancock, and Catherine Elizabeth Hancock; sister, Lynda Anise (Lawrence) Russell; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family are cordially invited to a visitation on Friday, April 5, 2024 from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening at Daniels Funeral Home located at 901 E 2nd Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at one o’clock in the afternoon at First Presbyterian Church of Rome, 101 East 3rd Avenue, Rome, GA 30161. A period of visitation will begin at twelve o’clock in the sanctuary prior to the funeral service. Following the service, a procession will lead to a graveside ceremony, open to all, at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens at 2549 Shorter Avenue, Rome, GA 30165.
