Raymond Dempsey Kerce Sr. passed away on Tuesday January 17, 2023, surrounded by his family, at a Rome hospital after a long illness. Dempsey was born and lived in Rome until he built a home on the family farm near Kingston, GA. He was active in several civic organizations which included a time as president of the Rome Lions Club. He was a social science educator in the Northwest Georgia area for more than 40 years, teaching American history at the high school and college level. He was also an author.
Dempsey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome. His greatest loves were God, his family, his animals, and his farm, where he was most at home. Gardening, clearing the land, walking the trails; he loved it all. When traveling he loved Jekyll Island the most and would often be found on the beach fishing or sitting outside watching the sun set. In his down time, he loved reading non-fiction, watching Westerns, and watching the Weather Channel. He loved driving on the open road.
Dempsey was preceded in death by his parents Raymond Orr Kerce and Ima Jean Dempsey Kerce. He is survived by his wife Katherine Ann Booker Kerce, his two children Raymond Dempsey Kerce Jr. and Katherine Lee Kerce Norris, as well as two grandchildren, Dempsey and Aurora, and multiple cousins.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life wake. It will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023, from 1PM to 5PM, at the house of his daughter and her husband. Please reach out to one of the family on Facebook for more information.
