October 24, 1927May 13, 2018

Robert D. “Bob” Cooper, age 90, of Rome, GA, died May 13, 2018 at a local hospital. Bob was born in Amsterdam, New York on October 24, 1927 son of the late Ewart Cooper, and Beatrice Finley Cooper. He was preceded in death by his only sibling William E. Cooper who passed away in 2013, William was also a WWII vet and served as a 1st Lt in the USAAF as a navigator on a C-47. He married his beloved wife of 65 years, Mrs. Noreen Becker Cooper in the year of 1952. Bob and his wife Noreen are lifelong members of First Presbyterian Church of Rome. He served in the US Army during WWII, served as a cook, and heard of the end of the war on a troop train in Louisiana. Bob worked in the carpet industry as a carpet designer for over 5 decades; in a time long before they did that kind of work on computers - everything was done by hand, by an artist, with pencil, brush and paint. Bob started at Mohawk Carpet after the war, when carpet was made on a huge looms using wool. He worked there until 1956. Bob moved his family to Carlisle PA, where he then worked for Masland Carpet. When Masland changed to automotive carpet in 1973, there was no need for carpet designers. Bob took his family to Chamblee, GA where he worked for the ET Barwick Carpet Company until they closed in 1975. After they closed, Bob found a job in Actonvale Quebec, Canada at Peerless Carpet. That was quite a move for the family but a valuable learning experience for all. Bob rejoined the carpet industry in Georgia in 1976 working at Trend Carpet until they closed in 1982. He moved on to Shaw Carpet in Dalton GA until his retirement and stayed active with friends in the Carpet industry over the years. Bob is survived by his wife, Noreen Becker Cooper; three sons; William S. Cooper, James R Cooper and Gary Cooper. Sister-n-laws; Judy Shannon, June Sajdak and Joan Cooper, Grandchildren; Matthew S. Dear Cooper Family, want to let you know you are in our prayers. We had the pleasure of living next door to you all from 1970-78 in Chamblee. My brother Mike and I spent many day's with Bill, Jim and Gary playing in the woods and street. Know we pray that you and your Mom are at peace and always love one another.
