Mr. Holloway was born on August 18th, 1922, in Rome, GA. He was the son of the late Joseph Kane Holloway and Leila Carter Holloway. Born and raised in Rome, and living through the depression, Mr. Holloway volunteered into military service at the age of 19 during the height of World War II. Stationed in the Philippines, and later Japan, Mr. Holloway was honorably discharged on November the 27th, 1945, after the conclusion of the war. A self-proclaimed lover not a fighter, Mr. Holloway met shortly after his return the love of his life, Miss Grace Mae Williams at the local roller skating rink. Miss Williams soon became Mrs. Grace Mae Holloway, to whom he was married for 66 years. Mrs. Holloway preceded him in death on July 27th, 2012.
Mr. Holloway had strapping good looks and was often mistaken during his teens and twenties as movie star of the day, Tyrone Power. In fact, during his military service, he was once swarmed when he disembarked his ship by a mass of autograph seekers. Mr. Holloway, with permission of his captain, obliged the crowd, and signed “Tyrone Power” for each and every one of them. In addition to his good looks, Mr. Holloway was a natural golfer, who could shoot par with a handful of used clubs during his youth, and later beat any who would play him, even after years of not playing the game.
Mr. Holloway was a devout Catholic, and a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Rome, GA., with his grandmother donating the land for the construction of the first St. Mary’s Catholic Church building in Rome.
Always a kid at heart, Mr. Holloway loved to sing and play piano, picking out tunes by ear with no formal training. He loved to garden, and collect arrowheads, fish, and play with his grandchildren, and at the age of 80 years old taught himself how to use a computer. On December 6th, Mr. Holloway left this world to be reunited with his love, remarking to his nurse, Jada, shortly before his passing that he was not alone, that his wife was with him again now.
Survivors include three daughters, Carole Holloway Lancaster and her husband Joseph, of Roswell, Emily Holloway Leffew and her husband Donnie, of Poulan, and Kathleen Holloway Wade and her husband Terry, of Cave Springs; three sons, Joseph Stephen Holloway of Cedar Bluff, AL, James Patrick Holloway and his wife Mary Jane, of Rome, and Thomas Leo Holloway and his wife Vickie; one brother, Jim Holloway of Rome; nine grandchildren, Grace Holloway, Erin Abbot, Christy Matthews, Haley Thomas, Hunter Lancaster, Jessica Rentz, Bryan Holloway, and Rachel Knight. Twelve great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Stephens and a brother Patrick W. Holloway.
Services for Mr. Holloway will be conducted Saturday the 12th of December, 2015, at 3:30 p.m. at Daniel’s Funeral Home with Deacon Stuart Neslin officiating, with a visitation preceding the service from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Interment will be at Bosque-Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach, Florida, on Monday, December 14, 2015, at 1 p.m.
