
A lifetime resident of Rome, he was born on February 17, 1922. He was the son of the late Samuel Berry Lane, Sr. and Frances Kirkham Lane. He was preceded in death by his sisters Thelma Lane, Lucille Ivey, and Frances Lyons.
Sam was a man of quiet character who loved his Lord, family and all works of nature. He served his country in the Army Air Corp during WWII. Among his many accomplishments included 42 years as a sales engineer with Battey Machinery Company. He was a gifted person who built and flew his own airplane. In 1972 he was awarded the coveted Experimental Aircraft Association’s top awards of “Amateur’s Built Aircraft and always captured first place in the shows that he entered. In addition to his talents he was a past member of the North Rome United Methodist Church and the Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Helen Parsons Lane, a son; Michael (Glenda) of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, a daughter; Denise Lane Brown (Greg) of Chatsworth, Georgia, Grandsons; Mark Lane (Courtney) of Bellingham, Washington, David Lane (Lucy) of Decatur, Georgia, and Sam Brown (Carrie) of Dalton, Georgia and great grandson; Brice Samuel Brown of Dalton.
The family will receive friends Friday February 27, 2015 from 1 pm to 2 pm at Daniel’s Funeral Home. A service will then be held in the Thomas B. Griffin Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Robert Brown officiating. Interment will follow at East View Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers are grandsons; Mark Lane, David Lane, Sam Brown, also serving are Sam McEntyre, Randy Garrett and Louie Canova and are asked to be at Daniel’s no later than 1:30 pm.
Honorary pallbearers are; Spencer Willis, Dudley Strickland, Bill Strain, Jerry Minge, Tracy Dickson, Howard Alexander, Victor Yeargan, Quillian Stewart, Tom Caldwell, Alton Everett, and Frankie Coker.
