

2017 in Rome, GA. Born August 26, 1926 in Atlanta GA, she was the daughter of C.
Benjamin Chambers, and Elsie Bryant Chambers. Predeceased by her husband,
Preston E. Newman, they were married for 63 years. Together, they enjoyed traveling,
golfing, and spending time with family.
Mrs. Newman grew up in Atlanta attending West Fulton High School and Atlanta
Jr College, the forerunner of GA State University, where she earned an associate
degree in business science. Her life was devoted to being a full time homemaker for
her husband and four children. Through the years she was a Sunday school teacher,
Scout leader, PTA officer, room mother and chauffer for carpools to children’s activities.
Mrs. Newman was a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary of Dekalb Medical
Center, serving as the chairperson of the Dogwood Gift Shop, a past president of the
Auxiliary and a past district officer of the Council on Auxiliaries of the GA. Hospital
Association. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rome, GA.
Survivors include her children, Stephen C Newman (Kathy) of Sante Fe, NM,
Jane Newman Brooks (David) of Ellijay, GA, Jill Newman Pate (Dan) of Rome, GA and
Tina Newman Early (Tom) of Harlem, GA. Grandchildren are Mark Preston Brooks
(Lisa), William David Brooks (Morgan), Benjamin Charles Pate (Stephanie), Sara Pate
Congdon (Chris), and Samuel Chambers Newman. Great grandchildren are Miles
Turner Brooks, Marley Jane Brooks and Jack Preston Brooks.
A memorial service was at 11:00 am, Monday, February 27, 2017 in the
Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, Rome, GA. Rev. Dr. Robert Brown and the Rev
Jane Newman Brooks were the officiants. Inurnment with a private family service followed at
2:30 pm at GA National Cemetery, in Canton, GA. The family greeted visitors
beginning at 10 am until the time of the service in the Wilder Dining Room at First United
Methodist Church.
