
Ms. Smith was born on April 20, 1950 in Rome, Georgia, the daughter of Robert Freeman Horsley Sr. and the late Jeter Starr Horsley who preceded her in death on March 25, 2007. She was educated at East Rome High School in Rome and went on to pursue studies at Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama.
Ms. Smith was a member of the Daughers of the American Revolution. She served with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club.
She was a communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where she regularly attended the weekly Healing Service held each Tuesday. She also served in the Soup Kitchen Ministry.
Starr, as she was known to her family and friends, was associated with Proffits for over 20 years in the cosmetics department where her many clients became her friends. This was a great passion in her life. She also had a great love for cats and enjoyed the company of them throughout her life.
Her family was most dear to her and she is survived by her son, James Horsley Smith and his wife Hollye Lawrence Smith of Rome; a daughter Kathryn Will Smith of Rome; two granddaughters, Mary Burke Smith and Susan Harper Smith of Rome; her father Robert Freeman Horsley Sr. of Rome.; a brother, Robert Freeman Horsley Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Seattle, Washington; a sister, Susan Horsley Sipf and her husband Eric of Denver, Colorado; two nephews and one niece.
A private burial service will be held Saturday, February 26, at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Janice Bracken Wright officiating. A memorial service will follow at St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Greg Tallant officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in Daniel Hall of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where the family will receive friends.
Honorary pallbearers will include Will Enloe, Jimmy Mathews, William Mathews, Sam Moss and Carl Paxton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Peters Church Capital Campaign. This campaign will enhance handicap accesssiblity in all parts of the church; a cause very important to Starr.
