

Sylvia Street Hine of Rome, Georgia died April 30, 2026. Mrs. Hine was born October 30, 1936, in Gadsden, Alabama, to the late Bernard Marion Street and Judy Stovall Street. She moved to Rome in 1943 when she was 7 years old. She attended Rome City Schools and graduated from Rome High School. She attended Shorter College, now Shorter University.
On June 9, 1957, she was married to John Pollock Hine at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. They lived in Atlanta until Mr. Hine graduated from Georgia Tech. After his graduation and following his service in the U S Army, they returned to Rome.
Mrs. Hine was a communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she served two terms on the Vestry and was a member of the Altar Guild for many years and the chairperson for 3 years. She served on the Wedding Committee and was a volunteer for St. Peter’s soup kitchen.
Mrs. Hine was active in numerous community organizations. She served as President of the Junior Service League, receiving the Sustainer of the Year award in 1986. Other activities included serving as chairperson of the Speakers Bureau during the campaign for the Sara Hightower Regional Library. She served as president of the Friends of the Library. Mrs. Hine helped to establish the Friends of the Library Gift Shop and served as its volunteer chairman for 6 years. She was a volunteer for Good Neighbor Ministries for a number of years. Mrs. Hine served on the Board of Trustees of Thornwood School for Girls as well as Darlington School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Bernardine Street Lansdell, her brother-in-law, Richard Lansdell and her beloved husband of 67 years, John Pollock Hine, Sr.
Mrs. Hine is survived by her daughters, Judith Hine and Susan Duke (David), her son, John Pollock Hine Jr (Rebecca), grandchildren Edward Duke (Lauren), Camille Shaw (Taylor), Kate White (Isaac), Emma Duke Ferrugia (Joey), Will Beecham, Julia Hine (Trey), and Addie Duke Ochoa (Jackson) and her great-granddaughter, Noa White. Also surviving are a nephew, David Lansdell, a niece, Laura Lansdell Thigpen (Mark), and great nephew and niece, Zan and Sarah Beth Luther.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends in Daniel Hall following the ceremony.
A private burial will take place prior to the church service at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
The family extends a special mention of gratitude to the caring staff of the Renaissance Marquis, particularly the staff of The Harbor, as well Blue Summit Hospice, and Tracee Haygood, RN.
