
Mr. Prater was born June 4, 1938, the son of Curtie Bell Ferguson Prater and William Prater. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and a brother, Oscar Prater.
Mr. Prater retired from Inland Rome paper mill. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and writing and published a book of poetry. He served in the USAF 1957-1961 – two years served in Tarrajon AFB outside Madrid, Spain. He was an honor guard member for President Eisenhower on December 21, 1959. He was a member and elder of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He never met a stranger and loved his family and spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Lloyd Prater; son, Harold (Buddy) Prater (Sherry), Centre, AL; step-son, Lee Brock, Lindale; grandchildren, Brittany Prater, Cynthia Prater Allen (Clay), Coleby Prater (Ashley), Dillon Dodd and Wesley Dollar, Centre, AL, PFC John Brock (Anna), Tucson, AZ and Alex Brock, Lindale; great grandchildren, Chloe and Kaileigh Prater, Caisen Hamilton, Gavin and Alexis Dollar; brothers, Ty Prater (Linda), Centre, and Charlie Prater (Sherry), Spring Garden, AL; sister, Jimmie Buttrick (Jesse), Columbus, OH; sisters-in-law, Ann Milam (Gene), Rome, and Marcia Carmichael (Bobby), Hoover, AL; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3000 Garden Lakes Blvd., Rome, with his pastor the Rev. Jack Karch officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. At other hours the family will be at their respective homes.
