At the age of twelve, Barbara and her family moved to Anaheim, California. She attended Western High School where she was a member of the Silhouette Drill Team and was named Patty Pioneer in her senior year. While at Western, Barbara met Randy Stricklin, the love of her life. The couple went on to attend UCLA where she earned a degree in English. Barbara and Randy were married in August of 1965 and went on to have their four children, Geoff, Carrie, Ryan, and Allison.
Barbara was a homemaker while also working with several charity groups, coaching Carrie’s cheerleading team, volunteering at the kids’ schools, and working with Randy at Stricklin/Snively Mortuary. She was a patient, kind, and loving mother who instilled a love of learning in all of her children. She was a voracious reader and a lover of all things literary. Later in life, she went to Long Beach State University to pursue a Master’s Degree in English. After graduation, she went on to teach English Composition at both Long Beach State and Sierra College. After moving to Newcastle in 2005 and joining Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, she volunteered to teach classes on autobiography to members of the parish and other community members.
Barbara’s biggest joy was in being a grandmother. Her five grandchildren, Colette, Camille, Samuel, Quinn, and Collin enjoyed summer’s at “Camp Grammy”, baking, arts and crafts, and hours upon hours of stories with their Grammy. We often said she was born to be a grandmother. Her patience, love, and undivided attention are things that the children will remember their entire lives.
In retirement, Barbara and Randy enjoyed their evenings watching Jeopardy and Dodger games together, sharing meals, and the occasional ice cream treat. They loved being together and reflecting on the more than 60 years they spent together. Late last year, they moved to The Ivy at Blue Oaks in Roseville where they made many great friends who we know will continue to support Randy. We are all so blessed to have had Barbara in our lives and grateful to be able to call her daughter, sister, wife, mom, Grammy, and friend.
