Dear Matthews Family,

We just learned of Dr.vMatthews passing in 2024.  Both myself and my son Austin Lenth were patients of this.

We both truly appreciated his specialized m ed decal knowledge, skills, devotion, dedication and obvious compassion for others and our Country.  He shared the love of his family and his two daughters.  He was so dedicated to his patients and helped both myself and Austin through complex spine surgeries.  

We are forever grateful and saddened at the same time.  May God's mercy embrace Dr. Donald Matthews , family, frie b s and all past patients whom entrusted him so much and loved his wit and goodness 

Forever will be missed and forever we are thankful.

This is very late (June 6, 2025) because Kaiser never told me of his passing.  His name is still listed as my surgeon on Kaiser's website.  Doctor Matthews performed a laminectomy on my upper neck in April 2023.
It did not go as hoped, because the next morning after surgery I found my left arm was paralyzed, something he had warned me was a 5% possibility.  We had several conversations about my arm over the next few days, which were not fun for him.  My arm eventually returned to 85% of what it was.  We had some conversations about other things, Roman Empire engineering, his road trips with his Dad, and writing crime fiction.  I asked him about a short story I had written that included some neck anatomy.  My plan, after it was published, was to bring him a copy.  I expected to have more conversations with him, a man I admired.  At 83, I repeat a Clint Eastwood quote (Absolute Power), "Tomorrow is promised to no one."  A great loss.

I am so sorry to learn of Dr Matthews passing. He was my surgeon in 2018 and took over my case at the last minute when Dr Voegeli had a last minute emergency. When he came out to speak to my wife she was understandably concerned because she had not met him prior and assumed the worst. He managed to not only calm her down and assured her that the surgery went well. I am still very thankful for him for not only his professional expertise but his kind and caring manner. He was special.

I am a fire fighter with the local fire department Sac Metro Fire and was injured on the job. I was left unable to lift my leg due to a severely herniated disk at L5/S1 vertebrae. Donald drove to me at Kaiser Roseville the night before my surgery to introduce himself even though his home hospital was Kaiser Morse. He drove there to ensure me that I was in good hands, needless to say he delivered. I woke up from Anastasia after he performed a laminectomy on me and i could lift my leg again. Donald Mathews gave me my life back and I am forever in his debt.

I was both shocked and saddened to hear the news that such a amazing human being had left this world. As a surgeon was probably one of if not the best surgeons in the united states. But as person he was equally matched. From the first time I met him, he was one of those people that made you feel like you had known him your whole life. He studied my films with me, explained everything in detail, and let me have a say in how I wanted my surgery done wires n plates. He said it helped him have better ideas on providing his patients more flexibility with neck fusions like mine c2 through c7. He made me feel safe and my surgery and out come was beyond amazing. Truly owe him my life. But more importantly I loved his stories about his wife who he clearly had immense love and respect for and all her years in supporting him in this career choice and the sacrifice. And his kids. We swapped funny family stories. He just was a really personable and kind. Couldn't thank him enough. And thank you to his wife and kids for supporting him In a job that required a lot of family sacrifice to be able to provide such top quality care of so many of us patients. Prayers out to his family in this journey of grief. He's truly missed

One of my best friends in medical school .  We also use to ride bicycles together and  helped him develop a passion for cycling and racing.  Loved Don. Everyone loved Don   This is very sad.  Haven’t been in touch with him since graduation and I regret that a lot now .

I am gob smacked to learn of Dr. Donald Matthews' unexpected and untimely passing on Saturday, June 1st, 2024, at the age of 64 years.  He was my 85 year old mom's Spine Surgeon.  He performed her 4 laminectomies (combination of C3 - T1 and L2 - L5) in 2010, 2013, 2014, and 2021.  I took mom to visit her Primary Care Physician (PCP) today on December 4, 2024.  Having recently reviewed her Surgical History at her PCP appointment, mom asked me, "How is Dr. Matthews?" while I drove her home.  This evening, I randomly searched "MDO [My Doctor Online] Dr. Donald Matthews" and immediately burst into tears when the first hit was his Dignity Memorial Obituary Page.  I spent the next hour perusing photographs, reading tributes... and steeling myself to tell mom of his sudden passing.  She's currently viewing the beautiful photos as I type this tribute.  Mom and I are Korean, so she is especially enjoying photos of his wedding to his lovely wife and pictures of their beautiful daughters and extended family.   Conversant in Korean and German, Dr. Matthews was a Citizen of the World.  As a mid-career physician myself, I can proudly and admiringly say that Dr. Matthews was "old school:" He took time to listen to patients, and I believe he genuinely enjoyed hearing their stories.  Kaiser - North Valley (Sacramento / Roseville) was lucky to have Dr. Matthews and his competent team leading a Spine Surgery Center of Excellence.  His passing leaves a Dr. Matthews - sized hole in our collective hearts... and he's a tall man!  To his family and loved ones - Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of our beloved Dr. Donald Matthews. I met Dr. Matthews 21 years ago when I have my first surgeries by another doctor. He was there during surgeries & did follow up with me at the hospital after. After my original doctor left, Dr. Matthews became my primary spine surgeon. He's a doctor that listens to his patients & explains to them their diagnoses and any treatment options to consider & how those would proceed. I have a long medical history which started when I was young & I was used to doctors looking to a parent for information. He never did that. He was incredibly kind, & loved to talk during appointments. I loved his nurse, Jacqueline. She would come in and beep him to help him move forward to the next appointment even thought it took several attempts. The greatest testament to how great of a doctor he was & the kind of man he was is how he was so behind on appointments all the time, but his patients came back. There is no doctor I trusted with my life & no other spine surgeon could top what Dr. Matthews provided to so many. I spoke to him, during an appointment months before June, about pain management and possible surgery. We even talked about his retirement and I told him that he had to tell me when he would retire so whoever took his place as my doctor  would be able to hold a candle to him.

I send my deepest sympathies to his family, especially to his wife and daughters. He meant a lot to so many and we are all grateful to have been able to have him as our doctor.

I just did a web search looking for Dr. Mathews because he did my full back surgery. He was such a friendly, nice Doctor. I'm saddened by the loss of Dr. Mathews. 🙂

I’m so sad. I just learned of Dr Matthew’s passing during  my appointment with my primary care Dr. 
Dr Matthews and I met when I was still working in Law Enforcement 14 years . My back was going out on me and he took the time to  diagnose and address the issue leading to multiple successful surgeries performed perfectly by he and his staff. During our visits we talked and joked easily about everything. A few times his MA, Jacqueline had to knock on the door reminding him of patients waiting. 😀.  I will pray for his loving family in this difficult time.

I just learned of Dr. Matthews's passing this morning. I called the office with some questions for my 14-year-old daughter, who was his patient. Our family is so saddened by the news, He was a great doctor and took such good care of my daughter and helped her through her spinal surgery, and checked on her during her ICU and hospital stay. He knew we were so scared and answered all our questions and helped us through a tough time. I really believe he saved my daughter's life, and because of him and his team, my baby will have a normal healthy life. My condolences to his family and friends. He was my family's hero.

I just learned of Dr. Matthew's passing this morning. I am so saddened by this news. I was fortunate enough to meet him in April when he performed my spine surgery. He was such a bright spot during a really hard time. I am so thankful for the care I received from Dr. Matthews. You could tell he really cared about his patients and was a very skilled surgeon. I am happy to report that I have had a really good outcome after my surgery and it is all thanks to Dr. Matthews. I am so sad he won't be here anymore to help others and that I never got the chance to give him my update in person. I Loved Dr Matthew’s💕‼️. I worked with him in the PACU. But first met him in ICU where he would come to see our patient in the evening. Usually tired, sweating after doing surgery all day, he always had a beautiful smile and kind words to share. Always took his time with his patients who needed to talk. Was Present. Always had a twinkle in his eye for all of us who worked with him. Just wanted to smile and be happy. Loved jokes! Always ready to laugh! 
He made work Fun! 
He spoke of his family with pride and passion. Was a true family man. Always looking forward to going home! Though he was late many times for many events, You, his wife and girls, were his priority. 
Though he is gone from our sight, please be comforted that he is surrounding each of you with his loving spirit. He was truly appreciated and loved.

Dr Matthews was our hero for authorizing out of network surgery for a non FDA approved (at the time) alternative spine surgery that would save our young daughters spine from fusion when her original Kaiser surgeon refused. She had the surgery at UCSF and is doing amazing, 6 years later. What a loss for his family and for the medical community.

I met Dr Matthews July 2023 when I needed emergency spinal surgery. I was far away from family and alone on an ER gurney when I met him.  I was terrified of surgery due to a medical complication. He put me at ease telling me why I woke up paralyzed and with such confidence how it could be corrected. I have been a complicated case and have seen Dr. Matthews for a total of 3 surgeries since that initial encounter the latest this past March 2024. He told me he would take care of me so I could get back to my 5 children. I remember during our initial encounter his phone rang. It was around 11 in the evening. He excused himself and stepped a few feet away to take the call. I immediately noticed his serious demeanor turned light and he had the biggest smile. His wife was calling him asking him if he would be much longer and that his dinner was waiting (I could hear the call since I couldn't step away). He ended his call and turned to me, I asked if I was keeping him  he said not to worry about anything,  he would do my surgery first thing in the morning and get me walking again so I too could go home to have dinner with my family. Dr Matthews understood the importance of family and living life. Thank you  Dr Matthews for taking care of me so I could take care of my children and return to my family. I appreciate you tremendously.

Dr. Matthews was the kindest doctor we had ever met. My husband needed emergency surgery on his spine and Dr. Matthews made all of us feel comfortable about the up coming procedure and I remember him smiling at us the whole time and laughing with us. He made sure my family was comforted before my husband’s surgery. My daughter made Dr. Matthews a thank you picture for taking care of her daddy, and that’s when we learned the sad truth. We feel extremely blessed and fortunate that we got to know Dr. Matthews as everyone else who knew him. We will never forget him.

I just learned today of Dr. Matthews passing, my heart is so sad. I first met him in about 2011  because my daughter was referred to him from her Pediatrician. We lived in Stockton and he was in Roseville back at the time. He was so great with her and helped her with wearing a brace and followed her progression. I then was having back issues from the line of work I had done and went to him. We had things in common as far medical field and working on an ambulance. He was always so kind and helpful. He would always tell me I want you to go get a second opinion before I do anything. He spent so much time with you as a Pt. He did my 4  back surgeries and all were great. We moved to the Hollister and I told him I would not go to anyone but him. I trusted him with my life. It hurts to know that he is gone. Rest in peace Dr. Matthews and thank you for all you did for me, my daughter and Husband. To his wife and daughters I send my condolences. To his MA Jacqueline I also send my condolences for the loss of her co- worker you two were a great team at taking care of pt's.

Leslie Warren (patient) and wife Connie, we are so saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Matthews.  We first met January 2022 when Leslie was in excruciating shoulder pain. MRI showed severe stenosis and crushing of the spinal cord which untreated he would have been paralyzed.  Dr. Matthews performed surgery on C4/C5.  He was amazing.  Such a talented surgeon.  He truly cared about his patients and family. He would call and spend an hour or more checking up on how he was feeling.  A year later a follow-up MRI showed more more narrowing of the spinal column and surgery was done be at C5/C6/C7 March 2023 and June 2023 Dr. Matthews performed lumbar surgery. We were waiting for a follow up appointment when received an email of his passing.  We were so shocked to learn this.  Our hearts are saddened. He was such a wonderful, gifted and compassionate surgeon.  We enjoyed the time we had with him even though it was in a hospital setting.  We just wanted to express to his wife Youn, daughters Olivia and Isabella how very sorry we are for your loss. Heaven has  gained an angel, may you Rest In Peace Dr. Matthews.  It was such an honor to have known you! ❤️🙏

Eh,what's up Doc.  He was a friend  and surgeon of mine. Was looking forward to surgery June 10th.  You will be there in Spirit.  I trusted you with my life.  We both had a love of San Francisco bay area and books. The last one I gave him was,Cool Gray City of Love. 49 views of San Francisco.  History of.  He had a great sense of humor and great laugh.  He was my doctor and friend.

Doctor Matthew's was a passionate and caring person. He operated on me last year and was going to operate on me again next month. I enjoyed every second talking with him. He shared lots of stories and told me all about his life. His passion for surgery was admirable. His desire to help people was motivating. He will be truly missed.

I first met Dr. Matthews when I was 13, as he was to be my spinal surgeon for scoliosis. At a time when I struggled to adjust to my condition and wearing a brace, he provided so much empathy and consideration. I still remember as he sat with me labeling the different parts of the spine and just talking about life. As a surgeon who never even operated on me, Dr. Matthews wasn’t obligated to spend so much time helping me overcome my challenges, but he was always eager to do so. He inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, and now being in college, I will always remember his kindness and guidance. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Last night,  while at dinner with friends, I learned of Dr. Don Matthews passing. I am beyond heart-broken for his family. During his residency  and later as an attending, I worked , as a nurse , with him in the UCD ortho clinic. Dr. Matthews  was the kindess man ..  and that smile ! He treated everyone  with respect and dignity, and truly connected with his patients, by sitting & listening to them. He was much loved & admired.  Godspeed Dr. Matthews ....

The first time I met Dr. Matthew in 2014 I knew he was the perfect Dr. for me.  I admit I am that patient that needs to know ALL details and what the plan is.  He was kind, patient and understanding and my first minimal surgery went amazing.  When I had my follow up with him I told him he was magic.  He was there again for me in 2021 and as recent as just 8 weeks ago.  He supported me getting second opinions while making a big decision.  He and I came up with the best plan for me and my lifestyle.  I knew all along he would be the only one I would ever trust to fix my back for the final time.  I was so looking forward to seeing him and giving him our standard fist pump and  to thank him for his amazing skills.   I know he would be thrilled with how well I am doing.  He wanted to see pictures of my son's wedding and I know he would have loved all the military uniforms.  As I write this with a tear running down my cheek I send prayers to family and friends.  I will miss our talks about fitness, nutrition and our dogs LOL.  I can't thank you enough for always being there for me and all you have done for me and my family. Thank you for your service to our country. I will miss my buddy.

I suffered for almost 45+ years with almost debilitating back pain and Dr. Matthews not only fixed my grade 4 spondi with a floating L5, he gave me back my life! He had the most amazing bed side manner and was so excited to be able to fix me so I can enjoy and keep up with my grand babies! What an amazing human being and such a sad loss to all the lives he touched. Thank you Dr. Matthews for giving me back my health and I pray you are able to see all the lives you've changed!

I am incredibly saddened to hear of Don’s sudden passing. Truly an excellent surgeon and one of the hardest working physicians I ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with. Even though I only knew him through work, he was just one of those colleagues that I always looked forward to running into and chatting with, especially on busy weekends. Just a very good person who will be sorely missed by family, friends, and the tremendous number of patients whose lives he touched.

Aside from being a wonderful and conscientious physician and surgeon, Don was a wonderful colleague.  Don could always be counted on for a warm greeting and a generous smile to go along with his professional acumen.  Last time I saw Don was a few months ago.  I was out for a walk and he saw me as he was driving.  He pulled over and stopped just to say hello and ask how I was doing.  Wish peace and comfort for his beautiful family.

I am so shocked and sad to hear of Don's passing. He and I shared many patients over the years. Eventually, I became one of his patients when he and Uli operated on my C-spine (with great success!). Whether as a colleague, a friend or a patient, he was always kind, warm and personable, and of course, very skilled and knowledgeable. We will all miss him terribly. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Don’s death. I had the good fortune to work closely with him for years and had the greatest respect for him as both a surgeon and as a very kind empathetic individual. Dr. Mathews will be missed beyond words.  He showcased what it is to be human.  His laughter contagious, his connection and support of others unwavering.  Treating everyone as an asset to his life and bringing out the best in people.  Never missing an opportunity to say hi or check in. This is a terrible loss.  Dr Mathews operated on my broken neck and am so grateful for his talent and skill.  I was mm from being a quad and he did such an amazing surgery on neck my I have had no issues and fully functioning. Before and after the surgery he was one of the nicest people i have ever met.  My wife and I send our condolences to his family and friends.

The last time I saw Don was one year ago when I retired from UCD. Never missing a step, Don greeted me by trading jokes which was often our style of communicating with each other. He had an incredible sense of humor and always a smile.  It was a pleasure to participate in his training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Everyone will attest to his skills in surgery and compassion for his patients. I'm very sad that he is gone. I feel deeply for Youn and his two beautiful daughters and know what it's like to lose a parent at such a young age. His spirit will be with you forever.

I'm so sad to hear of Don's passing. I knew Don from swimming together. We swam early morning master's swimming for years at Johnson Ranch, and I coached his oldest daughter. Don was so funny and made swimming a blast. I saw him a few weeks ago from a distance but did not say hello to him. I regret that. What a shame he wasn't able to finally enjoy retirement, as I know he worked a lot. My condolences to his wonderful family. Mindy

Don was one of those funny, intelligent fellow residents who could turn a tough situation into a fun moment. He just had that warm, happy, helpful way about him. I'm sorry to hear about Don, we were in residency together.  He was a wonderful man, funny and very humble.  I have nothing but great memories of him.

I will always remember Don as first and foremost just a great friend.
      His office was near the entrance to the department and every time you walked in he would flash a smile and a greeting. “ what’s up” . He was always there if you needed advice or a friendly ear. He always had a joke, a story,  an interesting anecdote to pass on, or a book to talk about  and we could talk for hours. In this stress filled profession, his mere presence would be comforting and he always made everyone feel like things would be ok. 
      He was a meticulous surgeon with a prodigious memory who had built up a stockpile of wisdom based on experience and keen observation.
      Don was loved by his patients. He had the ability to make patients feel like they were heard and cared for and that he was truly on their side. They loved him for it. 
       My heart goes out to his family who he loved dearly and would often talk about. I offer my heartfelt condolences.
      Everyone in the spine surgery department will miss him terribly and he will be remembered. He was a brother to us all. We love you Don.

Don and I were at UC Davis Orthopaedics together in the 80’s.  Our paths crossed often at KP, and we were neighbors in Granite Bay.  I’m absolutely flabbergasted by news of his passing.

Don was an engaging, funny, warm guy—a consummate physician and a gifted surgeon.  He always manifested an undying love and devotion to his wife and family.

His was a life well-lived! Few people have the impact he had in relieving suffering and improving so many people’s lives…

He will truly be missed, but I’m confident he’s in a “good place”

I met Dr. Matthews during a Pre-op visit.  He wore a face mask but his eyes showed kindness and empathy.  His voice was calming and soothing.  I was immediately at ease and trusted him.   Dr  M did not sugarcoat the seriousness of the surgery nor did he promise a complete pain free recovery.  He was the Dr. I wanted and needed and I can walk because of him an his wonderful team  . I will miss him and pray for his family to hold him in their hearts and remember the good times, the fun times, the family times!

Don was a great friend and colleague. Last conversation we had; we were discussing when to retire.  He was looking forward to spending time with his wife and daughters. He had so much energy and cared deeply about his patients. Don's impact on orthopedic spine surgery at Sacramento Kaiser is immeasurable. I'll deeply miss his dry humor, his invaluable insight in spine surgery, and above all, the infectious laughter he brought to the operating room, always reassuring us that everything would be okay.

Donald dedicated his life to helping others. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and patients in Kaiser.

Don was someone I will never forget. He was a dedicated surgeon and cared so much about his patients. I worked with him for many years at Kaiser Morse Avenue doing many complex spinal procedures. We shared a love of books of all kinds and he loved to quiz me on plot twists and obscure literary quotes. Every year on March 15 he would say “Fran! Beware the Ides of March!” I truly enjoyed working with him and he will be missed.

Dr. Matthews is one of my favorite colleagues of all time.  I did not get to share many patients with him, but I always loved his approach, his pragmatism, and his genuine caring and kindness.  I miss him terribly!

My dad was a current patient of Dr Matthews. He was an outstanding Dr. We met him in 2022 for an emergency surgery on my daddy's back.  We traveled over an hour just for him. After the 7 hour surgery Dr Matthews called me and we talked for a hour and a half. He was such a thorough person and really cared about the quality of life for all of his patients. My dad had to have another surgery on March 28 of this year and Dr Matthews once again made my dad  feel very confident that this surgery would help him to be able to walk again. My dad is currently still healing and was planning on seeing him in 2 weeks for a follow up. I'm in complete shock and very saddened by Dr Matthew's  passing. He was such a caring , compassionate and funny Dr. I would love to hear him talk about the spine. He was so knowledgeable and very helpful. He always had time to discuss family life and sometimes Ms Jaqueline would have to come knock on the door to let him know there were other patients waiting on him! He will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time who he absolutely loved.

Miss him calling me “Winny Winny “ every time he saw me and his trumpet sounds he would make.  Sharing my unique tropical fruits with him was a fun thing to do because he will start talking about the fruits origin.  He will be forever missed.

Dear Dr. Donald Matthew’s Family,

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Donald Matthew. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. Dr. Matthew was a remarkable individual whose contributions have left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. I will remember his witty comments and trivia questions during our long hours in the OR. His choice of music uplift my energy as he plays his favorite playlist “Loverboy”.
Most importantly I am going to miss his 15min patient debriefing prior to induction of anesthesia.

I will always cherish our last convo together. Every time I pass by his office, he would  always look over at who was coming in and ask how they were doing. We talked about our families which always brought a smile to his face . He was always there for me and my family when I needed it the most. Dr Matthews was a great man and mentor. He made such an impact to everyone he met.

I first met Don when I was a 4th year Medical student and Don was a Surgical Intern at UC Davis Med Center. Don always had a smile on his face and was  always approachable and friendly. After Don finished his Air Force requirements and was hired on at Kaiser, 
He remained the same friendly, helpful partner and friend. He went above and beyond in 2021 when I had to reach out to him from Hawaii for advice and assistance when my brother sustained a severe spine injury. Don was instrumental in getting my brother the care he needed.
Don’s greatest love was his family and golf. Fortunately we would get to see Don and Youn often out on the golf course. Definitely his Happy Place. Rest In Peace Don

Dr. Matthews was a dear friend and colleague. His untimely death is a shock to all of those who knew him and worked with him in the OR.

Whether talking on the phone or in person, we almost always shared a huge laugh.  He always ended a call with “bye bye”……so kind and gentle. 

His ridiculously corny jokes found him laughing more than any of us……..but the joy he experienced making us laugh was contagious.  

Don’s friendship and humor will always be so very special to me. “DK” was absolutely loved by OR staff and especially his patients. He was an “Old School “ MD that would take whatever time he felt his patients needed, despite the pressure to do more and be “efficient “.  His patients absolutely loved him.

Dr. Mathew’s death leaves a huge hole in the KP Morse OR that no one can ever fill. 

I am blessed to have known him and more importantly, to have him as a friend. As a Manager, his support and loyalty were so very much appreciated. I could always count on his advice and genuine caring.

Blessings to his family, and to his colleagues and the OR staff. Our time with him was far too brief.

As a patient , colleague ( Kaiser Doc for 34 years) and friend, I'm in complete shock and very saddened by Don's passing.   He was such a caring , compassionate Doc  in my care ( 3 back surgeries).   He had a very quirky sense of humor and such a friendly demeanor. He always had time to discuss family.   He will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Our deepest sympathy to the loss of Dr. Don Matthews. I have known Dr. Matthews since I started in the Spine Surgery Dept. in 2016. I had the pleasure of supporting him when he was the Chief of the Dept. in his Administrative needs. He was such a nice man. I really enjoyed working with him, and I'm going to miss seeing him in the office. Dr. Matthews also saw my husband for his back issues, and Denis said he felt like Dr. Matthews really cared and took the time talking to and listening to him. I loved working with him.   A guy that shot from the hip and wasn't afraid to give his opinion and advocate for his patients.   A true laugh in the OR.   The OR's will definitely be quieter without him.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr Matthews. What a loss to our world but such a gain to heaven. He touched so many people and so many lives while he  was here on earth. He had an infectious smile, and great  sense  of humor. His patients loved his care and beside manner.
Every time we called Dr Matthews, he would call back and say, “Don Matthews” never did I hear him refer to his self as Dr Matthews. He viewed himself as one of colleagues.  Thats what set him aside from other MDs. He was very humble, approachable, and he took time to get to know the staff who were taking care of his patients. It created a trust and respect between us and Dr Matthews. He was a valued part of our team and work family. He will be missed and never forgotten. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dr. Matthews was a great friend of my late father, Yuchen Chiu and a very caring medical professional for my mother. I also, once had a consultation and immediately felt his sincere warmth. Thank you for all you have done for us and for all. We are truly saddened ... Please accept our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies.

Whenever I faced uncertainty especially in his service, he was one of the people I turned to. His wealth of experience and willingness to help were guiding lights during challenging times. He offered perspectives that were both insightful and practical.  Don was more than just a colleague; he was a mentor to many. His support extended to the entire staff in the OR, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and teamwork. He believed in each one of us, pushing us to be our best selves, and celebrated our achievements as if they were his own. His legacy of dedication and support will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.  On behalf of the entire operating room staff, I want to express our deepest gratitude for sharing Dr.Donald Matthews with us. I had an appointment with Dr Mathews on 5/24. He had done 3 surgeries on me. I was getting ready for the 4th. I was so shocked to find out he had passed. I’ve been his patient for 10 years. The first time I met him. He said I was part of his family. I have learned many things about his family over the years. We have daughters close to the same age. He talked about piercings and tattoos he wasn’t buying into. His mom telling him to slow down. The surgery I had in February 2023. Doctor looked so tired. I told him he needed to slow down. In May when I saw him, he looked rested.  Anyway, my husband and I send our condolences to the Mathew’s family. As you know he was a very skilled professional physician. He had a compassion for his patients and had excellent knowledge of the spine. I appreciate the time you allowed him to spend with his patients. May he rest in peace.

My husband and I were first introduced to Dr. Mathews family in 1963 when “Donnie” was about 4 years old with an older brother and sister “Sissy “ and “Bobo” and later a  younger sister. During the next 3 years our families grew very close, continuing our relationship after our return to the US. My feeling when observing Donny from very early on he was going to do great things. My husband and I were honored to travel in our van to California to attend his graduation from pediatric school and he became as successful as we anticipated he would become.
He will be missed as a Doctor, family member, husband, father, and friend.

My heart 💔 was broken when I heard of DK’s passing. That’s what I called him…DK. He said I reminded him of his “Aunt Mac”, so that’s what he called me “Aunt Mac.”
I worked with DK in the OR for 8 years. I always loved it when that was my assignment for the evening because I knew it meant fun and laughter. He was a sweet soul and will be greatly missed. God bless his family and know that y’all will be joined together again one day. In the meantime, know that the Lord holds him close. That is Gods promise. 
Prayers to the family,

This is how I’ll remember my brother. Always laughing and having a good time. This was taken at our sister’s wedding. Don came in looking all dapper and handsome, as he always did. He took off his tuxedo jacket and everybody just busted out laughing at him because he had this white tuxedo shirt on, and the sleeves and the back had like palm trees and flamingos (I think it had flamingos) all over it. Anyway, it took everybody by surprise and everybody got a good laugh. This is one of my favorite memories of my brother, Donnie.
