Douglas Ned Poffinbarger Sr.

Ned Poffinbarger, a long-time resident of the Sacramento area, passed away at the age of 96. Born in Burlington, Iowa in 1929, the Great Depression had a big impact on his formative years. Soon after high school, Ned joined the air force and served four years of active duty as an aircraft engine mechanic during the Korean War era—a period he looked back upon with deep patriotism and pride.

Following his military service, Ned built a diverse career that saw him working as a dedicated civilian government employee, selling encyclopedias door-to-door, and in retail sales at Sears & Roebuck and later Thomas Brothers Maps.

Beyond his professional life, Ned was a man of many passions and a vibrant community presence. He was a talented banjo player who found immense joy in music, particularly Dixieland Jazz, and he cherished every opportunity to perform and collaborate with fellow musicians. He was a familiar and beloved fixture at local dance events, especially on Friday nights, where he found deep fulfillment in the social connections and community spirit that music and dance fostered.

Ned was known for his remarkably sharp memory and his principled nature, holding firm values of honesty and integrity. He remained deeply engaged with his social circle and interests well into his later years, arranging music performances at Lotus Thai restaurant and enjoying Sunday morning coffee and pastries at Ettore’s Bakery & Cafe.

Ned is preceded by his brother Leonard and grandson Cory. He is survived by his daughters, April and Gwen; his son, Doug II; his grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, Li’l Justin, Megan, and Doug III; and his great-grandchild, Keaton, nephews, niece and cousins. Ned will be long remembered for his spirited energy, his love of jazz, and the enduring warmth he brought to his community of musicians and friends.
