Hernando Caampued passed away peacefully at the age of 86 in Roseville, CA surrounded by family on April 5, 2021 after he suffered complications of infection three months prior. He joins his wife, Cecilia Caampued, to whom he was faithfully devoted for 56 years until her passing in 2019.
Born in Boliano in the province of Pangasinan, Philippines to Mariano and Adriana Caampued, he is the fourth of seven children. Young Hernando was an academically successful student who graduated from high school (Arellano University) at age 15. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Central (Polytechnic) Colleges of the Philippines and was board certified by age 22. He also received his B.S. in Environmental Engineering at SEATO Graduate School of Engineering at age 26.
In 1963, Hernando married Cecilia and had 4 children. By age 30, he founded Barangay Builders and was President and CEO for 8 years. In 1973 he heard the call to emigrate to the U.S. to raise his family in pursuit of new opportunities and the American dream where he accomplished a successful 47 year career as a professional civil engineer.
Hernando continued his American dream by starting his own engineering, surveying, and construction management firms. In addition to his professional career, notable volunteer work in public service included CAL-TRANS Business and District 4, American Public Works Association, California Department of Corrections, and Santa Clara County Traffic Authority and East Flood District.
His passion to support minority business, political empowerment, and community outreach throughout his lifetime spanned numerous professional, political, religious and fraternal organizations. Highlights of his service included Filipino-American (Fil-Am) Chamber of Commerce, Fil-Am Political Association (FAPA), San Jose Airport Commission, and Fil-Am Catholic Association of St. Victor Parish in San Jose. Fraternal organizations included Freemasons and Knights of Columbus.
As a delegate to the Republican National Convention in New Orleans (1988) and Houston (1992), Hernando was also a member of the 1988 Electoral College in California. As a member of the U.S. Commission on Minority Business Development, he was the first Filipino appointed by a U.S. president (George H.W. Bush) to serve on a Federal Commission mandated by Congress in 1990.
Despite Hernando’s commitment to his business and volunteer work, he was faithfully committed to his wife, Cecilia, traveling with her, going on cruises worldwide with her and their friends, and singing alongside with her in the church choir. He and Cecilia sang with St. Victor Church Choir for 16 years in San Jose and St. Clare Choir in Roseville for 8 years.
He lived life to the fullest, always with a friendly smile, a vigor for life, and a love for his family and friends. Along with this, he always had a deep passion to serve God in his church, community, and country.
He is survived by his children: Theresa (wife to Joseph Prindle), Josephine, Cristina (wife to Steve Darrow), John (husband to Katie Eppler); grandchildren: Jeremy, Christian, Hannah, Jacob M., Jacob C.; his sisters: Juliet, Norma, Piedad, Linda, Lina; and his brother Mario.
