

Leah Marie Gouveia Gomes, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at Eskaton Village in Roseville, California. She had moved from Kona, Hawaii, to California in February 2024 so that her children could provide support and care during her later years.
Born on November 5, 1937, in Kapaʻau, Hawaii, Leah was the daughter of Henry and Mary Gouveia, both educators with the Hawaii Department of Education. She attended Kalanianaole School and St. Joseph School before continuing her education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and later San José State University, where she earned her degree in elementary education.
Leah married Edwin Louis of Maui, Hawaii, and together they raised five children. She is survived by her children, Brian Louis, David Louis, Lynda Donnelly, Cynthia Silveira, and Sandra Shephard; her brother, Raymond Gouveia; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Leah dedicated 22 years to teaching second grade at Blossom Valley Elementary School in San Jose, California. Her commitment to education left a lasting impact on countless students and their families.
In 1995, Leah married Stanley Gomes and returned to Kona, Hawaii, where she enjoyed reconnecting with family, lifelong friends, and the community she loved. A faithful member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Leah devoted her time to serving others through ministry to homebound and hospitalized parishioners, as well as volunteering with local food and blood bank programs.
Leah cherished her family and friends. She loved traveling, gathering with loved ones, and welcoming visits from her children and grandchildren. Her warm and loving personality drew people to her naturally. Always positive, compassionate, and quick to share a laugh, Leah brought joy and comfort to everyone around her.
Leah's legacy of kindness, generosity, faith, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
