
Raymond D. Oliva, at the age of 80, a prior Teacher and Faculty Member with Sierra Community College for 36 years, passed from this world on January 10, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois and lived there until joining the Air Corps at the age of 18. Upon completion of his military service, he moved to the fair weather, small town of Roseville,California where he began his higher education and started a family. From 1961 until his retirement, Raymond was a Teacher of writing, literature and film studies at Sierra College. During these years of teaching at Sierra, he also served our college in various capacities, as follows:
1964-1968 Co-director of the Writing Center
1969-1970 Chairman, English Department
1970-1973 Dean, Humanities Division
1977-1987 Chairman, Department of Media Arts
1983-1987 Chairman, Communications Studies Program
Mr. Oliva's other professional experience at Sierra College includes:
Editor of Viewpoint (four years)
President of AAUP
Vice-President of the Faculty Association
Co-Chairman (with President Weaver) of the President's Council
He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association, SOAR,Modern language Association,National Council of Teacher's of English, California Council of Media Arts, California Association of Media Arts Teachers. Raymond also produced the following publications: Tilting at Windmills, Teaching Technology Corp.,1964, Programmed Instruction in English, Mast Development Co., 1964 and English Communication Skills, Teaching Technology Corp., 1966. Raymond is survived by his two children, Daniel Oliva and Renee Chance; 5 Grandchildren, Martin Chance, Nathaniel chance, Sophia Chance, Danielle Oliva and Andrew Oliva and two sisters, Anita Donaldson and Lolita Albrecht. A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday January 20th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery Chapel, 7101 Verner Ave, Sacramento,California.
