Elizabeth "Betty" Mary Slinde

October 17, 1931February 9, 2021

Elizabeth “Betty” Slinde peacefully passed away on February 9, 2021 at the age of 89. She was the daughter of Gifford and Elizabeth. Betty began teaching at 18 years of age in a one-room rural school in Osage, Minnesota. She later moved back home to Roseville, Michigan where she taught for ten years and was an elementary and middle school principal for another 23 years. She was also a Macomb County Commissioner for Roseville and Eastpointe from 1979 to 2009, where she was proud to serve and support her community. She played an important role on various commission committees, the Mental Health Board and SEMCOG (the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments). She was also active in the Democratic Party at the local and state level. In retirement she resided at the Park Place senior living facility in Warren, where she happily organized guest speakers, games and other activities for her many friends there. Betty was devoted to her mother, who inspired her to a life of service to others, and they loved traveling.

Ms Slinde was my 5th grade teacher at Washington Elementary in Roseville. And later, as an adult, Betty and l became friends thru Holy Innocent Catholic Church. It was always fun to remember those days with her, she would remember things you did as a child in her class, that you totally forgot about. I will fondly remember you always. My most sincere condolences, with much affection.

Here at Park Place, Betty was instrumental in developing and promoting group Rosary, the Catholic Holy Communion service and the Good Friday service. Before the pandemic, every Tuesday evening Betty and Berny, my late wife, would play pinochle against me and Vince. On other nights Betty was a wizard at Skip-Bo and Rummikub. Despite her hearing impairment Betty was a wonderful conversationalist and impressively knowledgeable. . We already miss her very much.

Commissioner Slinde was a thoughtful hard working County Commissioner. When I served as the Macomb County Community Services Executive Director she served on the community board required by the designation. She always put the well-being of the community first. Please accept my condolences to family and loved ones. Patricia Gibbs

Our loss is heaven’s gain. Betty was a teacher at Washington Ele when I was in the second grade there! She was also active politically when I was as an executive director for the Michigan Education Assoc in the Macomb Co and Grosse Pointe school districts. What a grand reunion it was! Betty was always a vigorous advocate for teachers and students. Years later I owned a lobby firm and represented the Macomb Co Board of commissioners and Betty was on the board. So, I speak 68 years of experience when I say she added value, integrity and advocacy wherever she went. May God bless Betty!

I really enjoyed getting to know Betty from the years we served together on the County Board of Commissioners. I always admired her skill as a legislator, and am also so glad that we became good friends.
She touched countless lives in many different ways, and will be greatly missed.
