Lieutenant Colonel Frank M. Huxley, USAF, Retired, age 93, of Roseville, Michigan passed away December 11, 2011 in Warren. Colonel Huxley was born November 7, 1918 in Buffalo, New York. He was the beloved husband of the late Anne R. Huxley, and was the loving father of five sons: Michael (Elizabeth), Paul (Cynthia J. Pasky), David (Lois), Ken (Cindy), and Thomas (Jessica). Colonel Huxley was also the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Kathleen, Jenni, Chana, Emily, Robin, Meghan, Adrian, Christopher, Ashley, and Jacob. He was predeceased by his sister, Leona, and his two brothers, Paul and Harry.
Colonel Huxley led a full life filled with love, a lust for life, integrity, a quest for knowledge, passion, and honesty.
He was born in upstate New York and never lost his love for a small town. He was a C-47 pilot during WWII as part of the 1st Air Commando Group in the China-Burma-India theater of operations. He flew supplies and towed gliders along the Burma Supply route, through the Himalayas, and often on missions behind enemy lines and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. One of his favorite companions on those long and treacherous flights was his dog, Roger. Roger was the lucky charm of the outfit. Everyone wanted Roger on their flight as he was good luck. During the war he was lucky enough to meet 2d Lt Anne R. Dickson. They married and raised five wonderful sons along with a collection of collies.
After the war he was transferred to Bolling Field in Washington DC, and was a pilot for many VIPs, including Mrs. Roosevelt and Generals George Marshall and Hap Arnold.
Colonel Huxley was a registered nurse, a science teacher in Detroit (retiring with 34 years of service), Scout Master, and taker of all odd jobs, all of which added up to him being a successful provider. He worked hard at numerous jobs and logged numerous hours to care for his family.
Frank was a handy man, wood carver, and had incredible talent working with stained glass. He built most of a cottage in the Eastern most tip of the Upper Peninsula. He built all of the kitchen cabinets in his garage in Roseville and hauled them in his beloved Cadillac to Detour, Michigan to install them in the cottage. Frank enjoyed cars, travel, music, food, and discovered fine Port wine in his mid 80s. He traveled extensively around the country and around the world, to include Hawaii, Scotland (where Anne was born) and Lithuania. One of Frank’s other passions was pool. He was good, very good. He claimed the game was all science
He rescued and loved a very large Bearded Collie named Mac. They traveled up north, to Florida, New York, Texas, and they enjoyed a reputation all their own.
An avid pilot with a love for adventure, Frank flew in helicopters, hot air balloons, and an original WWII fighter plane--all in his 80s. The stories and accomplishments are many, too many to share here today.
