Gary Obney Sr, of Eastpointe, MI passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026 at the age of 78, with his family by his side. He was born on March 6, 1948 in Clarksville, Tennessee to Leroy and Mary Obney. He retired from Chrysler Warren Stamping Plant.
Gary had many hobbies which included watching ice hockey and his favorite player, Alexander Ovechkin. He also played ice hockey well into his late 60's. His favorite times were spent taking car rides with his wife Becky and their dog Bud, or being with his children and grandchildren, either just hanging out with them or watching them play sports. He loved watching old movies, listening to music, being on his computer and working in his garage. He had so many talents and will be greatly missed.
He married Becky on June 25, 1966 and they had 4 children. They were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this year and he tried so hard to be here for it, but we will still celebrate this amazing achievement.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Becky and his children, Gary (Lori) Obney Jr, Wanda (William) Hughes, Rhonda Obney, and Lena (Brian) Landers. He was the proud grandfather to Autumn (Anthony), Elizabeth (Benjamin), Ronnie, Rebecca (Kennedy), Liam (Michailla), Eric (Brooklynn), Rachel (Alex) and Andrew (Kalena). He is also survived by his brother Bill (Sue) Obney, his dog, Bud, his honorary daughter, Denise, aunts, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Mary Obney, his brother Ronnie Obney, his sister, Wanda Scarsella, his niece, Kathy Bossenberger and nephew, Jimmy Scarsella.
Gary loved wearing flannels, so you're welcome to wear one in his honor!
Visitation will be held at Kaul Funeral Home, 27830 Gratiot Ave, Roseville, MI 48066, on June 6, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a sharing service at 6:00 pm. Please share a memory with Gary's family on his online guestbook.
