Mark Thomas Squier, 77, of Fraser, Michigan rejoined the Lord, and his late wife Betty, on January 3rd, after he and his care team at Troy Beaumont Hospital expended their full arsenal in a valiant battle, on two fronts, against advancing age and declining health. He was surrounded by family and loved ones when he made his transition.
The youngest and last-surviving child of Robert and Aune Squier, Mark was raised with his three siblings, Carol, Glen, and Teresa in Harper Woods, Michigan. A fateful trip with friends to Toledo, Ohio in the Fall of 1966 would lead him into the presence of his future wife and the love of his life, the aforementioned Betty Squier (née Brown) of Highland Park, Michigan. Married seven months later in 1967, they would go on to 56 years of marriage as parents to five children, Renée (Rob), Bob (Marisol), Dave, Marcia, and Mike, the youngest of whom, your author, maintains that Mark and Betty saved the best for last.
Mark spent his 77 years among us living in care and service to others. Amidst serving and eventually retiring after 21 years as a Police Officer and 23 years as a U.S. Army Veteran, he and Betty also made the time, and made themselves available to St. Pio, formerly St. Athanasius, in Roseville, Michigan; the Boy Scouts of America, in which all three of their boys were enrolled in their youth, two earning the rank of Eagle Scout; the Knights of Columbus, which he joined later in life alongside his son, David; and perhaps most notably, the Retrouvaille community. A program in which they participated in its founding weekend, they would help to establish it fully first in Michigan and then aid its spread across the nation and into several international communities. Since 1991, their selflessness and dedicated service to this non-profit institution directly aided over 7,000 couples in the metro-Detroit area alone.
Ever the humorist, and invariably the single most gregarious character in any setting, Mark was capable of making a new friend in every single room that he’d entered. Self-titled but lovingly referred to by family and friends as “The Mark of Excellence”, he loved a good pun, almost as much as he loved a bad one. But truly, his actual love was bringing joy and laughter to those around him.
Survived by his five children and 11 grandchildren… Mark’s cheerful presence will be missed dearly, though I think we’ll all be able to find a smile knowing that he’s back beside his Princess, holding hands once more, on a nice stroll down some side street in Heaven.
A visitation for Mark will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm at Kaul Funeral Home – 27830 Gratiot Ave, Roseville, MI 48066, with a scripture service and open eulogy at 6:00pm.
