Alva Robertson Byrom

.Alva Robertson Byrom died on March 6, 2012, Alva was born in Byromville, GA, Dooley County, the second son of John S. and Mary Ethyl Robertson Byrom. He was preceded in death by his mother who died at age 34 in 1942, his father in 1972, and his brother Col. S.B. Byrom, U.S. Army (retired). Survivors include his wife, Frances Cook Byrom, Alpharetta, GA, sister Maryanna Hunter and husband Jack, Monticello, GA sister in-law Sandi Mitchell Byrom, San Antonio, TX, dear cousin Nancy Grumann of Atlanta and many family-in-law, nieces, nephews and Cousins.He and his sister were raised in Atlaata area by aunts and uncles, Jim and Anna Cook and Morris and Mary Elizabeth Robertsonfollowing his mother's premature death. He attended GA Military Academy (now Woodward in College Park) grades 8-12 and graduated from GA Tech in 1958 with a degree in civil engineering. His enthusiasm and suport for his alma mater were unwavering for the sports teams and the annual scholarship fund roll call. After four years of ROTC at Tech, he served as 2nd LT in the U.S. Army at Ft Campbell, KY. He began a 32 year career with the GA Dept of Transportation in 1959 as a Junior Highway Engineer and rose through the ranks to State Highway Engineer directing all engineering-related departments including 4 of the 5 divisions of GDOT: Pre -construction, Construction, Operations, and Planning and Programming. He was totally devoted to the challenge and opportunity to improve all phases of roadway trransportation in GA. His family can never recall his saying, "Wish I didn't have to go to work today." In 1991 he joined Moreland-Altobelli Assoc. and retired in 2006 as Vice-president, Engineering, concluding his 48 year career. Services to celebrate the life of Alva Robertson Byrom will be held on Thursdy, March 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Roswell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday AM from 9:00 AM until service time. He will be laid to rest at Whitfield Memorial Gardens in Dalton, GA. Arrangements by Roswell Funeral Home.
