Moffie was born on January 23, 1930 in Christopher, Illinois to Rev. E. L. Simmons and Mayme Blanche Caruthers Simmons. She was the granddaughter of Rev. Henry Bryd Simmons and Rev. Florence Pringle Simmons and Rev. William Samuel Caruthers and Rev. Margaret Webb Caruthers. All have preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, William Bryd, Ernest Lesley, Jr. and James Orton and five sisters, Esta Berniece, Myrtle Lee, Sammie Ernestine, Mayme Thomazine, and Peggie Rowena. She was also preceded in death by her daughter in law, Mary Garrett Cato.
Moffie married Robert "Bobby" Paul Cato on October 26, 1946. Bobby also preceded her in death.
She is also survived by her 4 children, Robert Paul Cato, Jr., Derhl Bruce Cato (Judy), Vicki Burrell Schneider (David), and Terry Lou Meyer (Steve); 12 Grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Moffie was a pioneer in computer programming for the parts division of General Motors, and was the first woman programmer there. She was also a talented musician, playing the saxophone, piano, and baritone ukulele. She loved music and loved singing from the Red Back Hymnal. She harmonized with her beautiful alto voice and loved singing shape notes.
In the words of Proverbs 17:22, "A cheerful heart is good medicine," and Amalfi embodied this truth. Her laughter filled our hearts, she had a unique ability to uplift those around her, reminding us of the joy that God promises.
There will be a service to celebrate Moffie's life on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 3:00 pm at Restoration Church, 410 Rucker Road, Alpharetta, GA.
