Betty L. Stroup, affectionately known as NANNY, age 82, of Marietta, Georgia, peacefully passed away in the comfort of her home on Sunday, March 2, 2025. She spent her final day in her happy place—God’s creation—enjoying the outdoors, tending to her yard, lounging by the firepit with her son, and of course, enjoying Chick-fil-A sandwiches. Loved so deeply by her family, she spent her days surrounded by them, sharing laughter, love, and unwavering devotion. Her heart was full and overflowing with happiness. She lived a meaningful life, one rooted in faith, love, and service to others.
She was a God-fearing, selfless woman whose love reflected the heart of Jesus. She didn’t just talk about her faith—she lived it, touching lives through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. She made a beautiful difference in the lives of so many. This is a heartfelt story of a life well-lived life that glorified the Lord in all she did.
Betty was the daughter of Arthur and Leola Hamil and one of nine siblings. She was the heart and soul, the rock and glue of her family, the one everyone turned to for guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love. She was the most dependable family mediator. She loved her family with all her heart, and her greatest joy was found in caring for them.
One of her greatest career accomplishments was driving a Cobb County school bus for 43 years, faithfully serving children and families in her community. Admirably, she retired at the age of 80! Driving was her passion, but driving those kids on the school bus was her calling. They weren’t just passengers, they were her kids, and she loved them dearly. Her fellow bus drivers became her second family, and even after retirement, she still spent her Fridays meeting up with them, laughing, reminiscing, and sharing in the friendships she cherished. Those Fridays were sacred to her.
Outside of her family and work, Betty was a woman of many talents and passions. She found joy in gardening, yardwork, building fires in her outdoor firepit and barrel, sewing, cooking, canning, shopping at thrift stores, watching Hallmark movies, and, of course, enjoying her Chick-fil-A sandwiches. She was full of energy, always staying busy, always pouring herself into the people and things she loved.
To know her was to love her, and all who knew her loved her. She never met a stranger, her warmth, kindness, and generosity made everyone feel like family. She will be missed more than words can express, but her love, kindness, and unwavering faith will live on in all who knew her.
Preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 49 years, Dan L. Stroup, in 2008, Betty was a loving wife, devoted mother of three, cherished grandmother of three, and a proud great-grandmother of four. She adored her family with every ounce of her being.
She is survived by her son, Eddie Stroup (Michelle Stroup); her son, Lonnie Stroup (Terrie Parks); her daughter, Judy Butler (Greg Butler); and her former son-in-law, Bill Chorn, whom she always considered her son. She was also the cherished grandmother of Brittany Pratt (Dustin Pratt) and their three children/her great-grandchildren, Micah Pratt, McKenzie Pratt, and Matthew Pratt; and her grandson, Zack Chorn, her well-known favorite person. She was also the loving grandmother of Brooke Sweeney (Kirk Sweeney) and their child/her great-grandchild, Maddox Sweeney. Also surviving are her sister, Rosie Mitchell, and her brothers, Robert Hamil and Fred Hamil.
The family will welcome friends for a visitation on March 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM followed by a memorial service to celebrate this beautiful life at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, Georgia 30076, 770-993-4811.
In lieu of flowers, donations to JDRF/Breakthrough T1D: Type 1 Diabetes are requested, as giving to others was always at the heart of who Nanny was.
"Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord." – Matthew 25:23
