Betty Ruth Thompson was born Betty Ruth Harris on October 26th, 1932 in Milledgeville, Georgia to Allen Eldo Harris and Lillian Hasty Harris.
Betty Ruth was the youngest of three daughters and the sole remaining Harris family member. In 1948, Betty Ruth moved to Atlanta, Georgia and was an employee of the S&W Cafeteria where she met another S&W Cafeteria employee, James Henry Thompson.
On December 11th, 1950, James and Betty Ruth were married. James was deployed to serve as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, while Betty Ruth set up for housekeeping and raising a family in Decatur, Georgia during the 50s and the 60s. In the early-70s, James and Betty Ruth moved to Roswell, Georgia and remained as residents until 1992.
James and Betty Ruth retired to James’ hometown of Hartwell, Georgia and James unexpectedly passed away in May of 1993. Being recently widowed, Betty Ruth decided to remain in Hartwell, Georgia where she became one of the town’s most active and well-known citizens.
Betty Ruth became a proud member of Abundant Life Baptist Church where she served the Hartwell community for several years. Betty Ruth was very active socially and had a multitude of friends.
Betty Ruth was known for her compassion towards her fellow church members and her keen sense of humor.
Betty Ruth is survived by her five children: Mr. Carey Robert Thompson and his wife, Cathy of Suwanee, Georgia, Sherry Thompson Betsch and her husband, Richard Betsch of Suwanee, Georgia, James Allen Thompson and his wife, Marilyn of Jacksonville, Alabama, Michael Shannon Thompson and his wife, Anne of Canton, Georgia, and Timothy Gerald Thompson of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Betty Ruth is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Betty Ruth will always be remembered for her love and compassion, her sense of humor, and her love and dedication to her children.
A visitation for Betty will be held Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 12:00 PM at Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076.
