Carl (Elton) Raymond Arthur

August 30, 1944October 10, 2021

Elton Raymond Arthur, affectionately known as Carl, 77, of Johns Creek, Georgia drifted into eternal sleep on October 10, 2021.

Carl was born on August 30, 1944, to the late Esther Arthur and Elton Atherley in Princes Town – Ward of Savana Grande, in the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Carl loved his culture and heritage. It showed immensely in his love of music; he enjoyed soca, calypso, and jazz. He was fond of the water and loved deep-sea fishing. After migrating to the United States in the late 1960s, Carl became a founding member of the Hibiscus Social Club in Brooklyn New York paving the way for the Caribbean carnival and celebration on Eastern Parkway that is takes place every Labor Day Weekend. He also began a career as a transportation mechanic. He worked on automobiles to airplanes at New York’s JFK airport and Mech Motors in Long Island City; he enjoyed fixing things – plumbing, electrical, anything wanting improvements.

In 1986, he moved his family from Queens, New York to build a new home in Deltona where he lived until moving to Johns Creek in 2017. While in Florida, Carl worked for Metal Manufactures and Wal-Mart.

Carl met the love of his life, Rita Morris in San Juan, Trinidad when they were in teenagers in high school. The two wed in New York in May 1966. He enjoyed traveling and creating lasting memories with her. Their love created and nurtured two loving daughters, Lisa and Abigail. His family was the light of his life, and his smile, laughter, and presence will surely be missed.

Along with his parents, Carl is preceded in death by his in-laws, Scipio and Georgiana Morris, stepfather Clarence Leonce, granddaughter, Katherine Chillman, niece, KathyAnn Seaton, and best friends (his brothers), Benjamin “Blues” Campbell, Roy Graham, and Carlisle Marks.

Leaving behind to cherish his memories is his dear wife, Rita; daughters, Lisa Arthur and Abigail Arthur-Chillman (Michael Chillman); granddaughters, Alyssa and Mia; sisters, Cheryl Atherley and Gail Arthur; sister-in law; Pam Coleman; brothers, Bryan Atherley (Joann), Selwyn Paryag (Patsy), and Slinger Francisco (Margaret); nephews, Sheldon Arthur (Avril Mitchell-Arthur), Bryan Carribon (Amisha), Don B. Atherley, Ryan King-Arthur, and Giordan Atherley; and nieces, Jaqueline Carribon, Jennifer Carribon, and Arielle Atherley. Cousin to many Arthurs, Carribons, Atherelys, Herreras, Fletchers, Romeros, Franciscos, Sherwoods, Grahams, See-Wais, Harrisons, and others who called him uncle.

Carl, Myrna, Graham and myself grew up in Petit Bourg,SanJuan our boyhood days was tinkering with cars, doing crazy antics on bikes, our favorite was when our Uncle Norman parked his car and go to bed, we'll go out and make a few taxi runs, for our pocket change, those were some crazy but good times. He then migrated to the U.S. I did 4yrs after him. Thru the years we never drifted apart, we didn't see each other all the time, but when we did it was like we saw each other the day before.I have to say we were Blessed to have spent a couple weeks with him and Rita in Trinidad just before the Curfew, he's my kids all Godfather, Uncle, and Mentor he was the kindest, funniest fun Loving guy, he didn't make anything bother him, most of all he was a loving good natured and attentive HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER and In-law to his Family, we'll miss him he's gone but will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. May GOD STRENGTHEN AND COMFORT HIS LOVE ONES. REST IN PERPETUAL PEACE CARL 🙏✝️

From the first moment I shook his hand, Carl was a friend. A real one not an acquaintance . He was a true and trusted friend to our family. He always looked for ways to help anyone in need. He taught me so much over the years through long conversations and his interactions with others.

Reta, Lisa & Abigail, he was so proud of all of you!

Carl was a rare individual and left us with great memories, we love & miss him!! Chris and Julie

I first encountered Carl in the early sixties when we both lived in Petit Bourg, San Juan.
I saw him darting around cars and doing all kinds of maneuvers on his bicycle on the Main Road. So I asked - Who is that crazy guy? And I was told - Carl Arthur.
I moved out of the neighborhood in 1967 and I did not see him again until the early 70’s when I migrated to NY. I was introduced to him by Aldwyn Rooks and from time to time we would go to his home in Queens on a Saturday to lime. On some Saturdays I would also take my eldest son Leon Jr who was a toddler, to Carl’s home.
I can state that Carl was soft-spoken but funny. He was fun-loving and enjoyed fast cars.
He was one of the kindest, most generous persons I have known. I believe he would have given his last possession to a friend if he needed it. I really marveled at his generosity.
I moved to Barbados in 1981 and except for his visit in the same year to witness Carifesta and to be with his dear friend, Sparrow, we were out of frequent contact thereafter. I later moved to Trinidad and we did meet during his visits to Trinidad.
The relationship blossomed again while I was visiting LeonJr in Atlanta and found out that Carl was also living in Atlanta.
Ironically, he and LeonJr (the former toddler) struck up a very close relationship. I know he cared very much for Carl and looked upon him like a father figure.
That is indeed a tribute to the wonderful, kind personality of Carl Arthur.
My wife Terry joins with me in extending deepest condolences to Rita, Lisa, Abigail and his sister Gail.
Gerald “Wire” Nelson whom Carl regularly visited in Salybia with his dear departed friend Carlisle, has also asked me to extend condolences to the family.
