

Dorothy Chilton Curtis, of Cumming, GA passed away on December 8 after an extended illness. She is pre-deceased by her husband Grant of 68 years who died in July. Dorothy, known as Dot to her many friends, was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She was born in Nashville, TN on June 28, 1926. She graduated from Isaac Litton High School and attended Carson-Newman College. In 1945, she married her high school sweetheart Grant Curtis in New York City, where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy. After Grant’s discharge from the Navy, Dorothy and Grant settled in Atlanta. Music was a very important part of Dorothy’s life. During her high school years, she played saxophone in the band and studied piano. She taught piano to dozens of young musicians and was the organist at Chamblee First Baptist Church for over 20 years. Even in her later years, Dorothy always had a piano at home with stacks of music sitting on top. Dorothy also worked as a benefits counselor for the U.S. Veterans Administration for 15 years, retiring in 1988. A central joy of her life in retirement was teaching the Progressive Sunday School class, along with Grant, at Johns Creek Baptist Church. Members of the Progressive class will serve as honorary pallbearers at the funeral service. Dorothy is survived by her sons, Bradley (Melanie), Carlton (Jan) and Paul; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is pre-deceased by her parents, Carl and Pauline Chilton of Nashville, and sisters Martha Mattison and Virginia Coffman. Funeral services for Dorothy Curtis will be held on Thursday, December 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta. A reception for friends and family will follow the service at the church. A graveside service for family members will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the music program of Johns Creek Baptist Church, 6910 McGinnis Ferry Road, Alpharetta, GA 30005, or to Peachtree Christian Hospice, 3430 Duluth Park Lane, Duluth, Georgia 30096.
