Dr. Harry Lee Broome
December 23, 1937 – May 30, 2021
The world lost a larger-than-life southern gentleman this past week. Harry Lee Broome, a prominent orthopedic surgeon in the Atlanta area for over 50 years passed away while surrounded by his family.
Dr. Broome was born in Salisbury, NC in 1937. He was Valedictorian at Needham Broughton HS in Raleigh NC graduating in 1956, where he also became an Eagle Scout and a champion tennis player. He went on to play tennis for Davidson College graduating in 1960. He then attended UNC School of Medicine and served as a physician in the US Army as a Major stationed overseas in Korea. Returning to Fort McPherson in Atlanta, he completed his training in orthopedic surgery at Georgia Baptist (now Atlanta Medical Center) and opened a practice, Chattahoochee Orthopedic Clinic, with his longtime friend and partner, Dr. Lyn Crooms. He later practiced at Pinnacle Orthopedics.
Harry was a family man, a dog lover, a student of history, a tennis player and a bass fisherman. Mostly, however, he was a charming, honest and sincere friend to so many people and those who were lucky enough to be counted amongst them have learned the true meaning of loyalty and friendship.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Broome and his beloved dog, Allie. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years and best friend, Sandra Jean (Sandy). His adoring children - Harry Jr., married to Karen, Trey, and Shawn, married to Paul Castino. His grandchildren include Payson, Evan, Anna, Jake, Abby and Michael who loved him dearly. It was mutual. His sisters, Betty and Bonnie and their extended families in North Carolina. Finally, he also leaves behind his two Portuguese Water Dogs, hundreds of dear friends, and thousands of largemouth bass fish that he put back into the water at the Suwannee River.
He is and will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA on June 18, 2021 from 12 noon until 2 pm with a celebration of Harry’s life following at 2 pm. the family has invited those who are unable to attend to join us virtually at: https://www.facebook.com/RoswellFuneral/

As a patient of Dr Broome, I had great respect for him. The office visits were so fun as he told stories about Elvis as well as his fishing trips. My condolences to his family and friends. I feel so blessed to have known him.

I became a patient of Dr. Broome’s when I was two years old and when I went to see him at age 31, he told me “honey, you have got to find a doctor who can take over your care”. There will never be another doctor like him. He literally changed the trajectory of my life and with every surgery improved my quality of life. I will forever be grateful for his wisdom and thinking outside the box. I am grateful that his son has become a life changing doctor just like his dad.

In 1981, when I was 17 years old I was in a terrible car accident with two of my friends. I had a separated shoulder, broken pelvis and broken knee. Dr. Harry put me back together again. He also gave the nurses heck because they kept moving my shoulder!
Years later when my ex husband incurred a drug problem, Dr. Harry and Sandy took the time to talk to me. I just adored Dr. Harry. My thoughts and prayers are with Sandy & the family and his precious dogs. I know you are brightening up Heaven! Looking forward to seeing you again one day.

Prayers be with all of you.
Dr. Broome was such a caring Doctor. Helped my Mother, Hilda, with her broken hip and osteoporosis pain.
He was my doctor when I endured two broken feet.
He performed the first hip surgery on my dear Wendell.
Such a caring and patient person.

I have many fond memories of fishing with Harry in Suwannee Florida and Tim’s Ford Lake in Tennessee. You never had a dull day when you fished with Harry. He was a great friend and I’ll miss him forever. My sympathies to Sandy and the kids.

A very kind loving man.My favorite memory of him is something I know he would have appreciated.I work as a janitor at Saint Josephs Hospital. And he came in as a patient a few years ago.I went to the patient information desk and asked what room a Harry Broome was in.The lady asked if i was joking.Luckily another nurse beside her looked it up and told me what room he was in.The lady must have thought I was nuts.A janitor asking what room a hairy broom was in.

I first met Harry at Focus on Fitness in Peachtree Corners in the late 70's. I, along with several other members of the club became quite fond of Harry. He would stroll in almost every day after a long day in the O.R. and clinic for a workout or to just sit around and pass time and talk. Not only was Harry a good friend but a dedicated and fantastic surgeon. He performed two procedures on me. He will truly be missed. If there's a bass lake in Heaven, I'm sure he'll visit it often. Sandy, my prayers are with you and your family. Russ Atkins
