

Mr. Ernest T. (Ernie) Johnson of Cumming, GA passed away Friday, August 12, 2011 at the age of 87. He was born in Brattleboro, Vermont on June 16, 1924 to Swedish immigrants and was very proud of his Swedish heritage. He served in the US Marine Corps in WW II and stayed in contact with his Marine brothers for the rest of his life. Ernie married Lois Denhard in 1947 and had three children: Dawn, Chris, and Ernie, Jr. He was a gifted athlete who pitched in the 1957 World Series. He shared his love for the game of baseball with millions of fans in his 35-year career as a Braves’ broadcaster. He was a proud member of the Braves’ Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. He was also the recipient of three regional Emmy Awards for his television broadcasting. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his sister, Dorothy Milkey of Brattleboro; his daughter-in-law Cheryl Johnson; special son-in-law Jacky Cheek, seven grandchildren - Rebecca Spake, Eric Johnson, Maggie Johnson, Michael Johnson, Carmen Johnson, Allison Johnson and Ashley Johnson and five nieces. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 15th from 3:00 till 5:00 p.m and 6:00 till 8:00 p.m at the Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA. The Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 16th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive, Atlanta. A reception will follow in the church hall following the Mass. Burial services will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Roswell with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Embracing Hospice Foundation, 5775 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30342 or to Enable Services of Georgia, 1200 Old Ellis Road, Roswell, GA 30076.
