With heavy hearts we say good bye to Frederick Reinhold Stewart, Jr., 80, who passed away on May 19, 2014, after battling gall bladder cancer. Fred leaves behind his wife, Nancy Fargason Stewart, Atlanta native; his children, Bruce Stewart, Terri Stewart Denmark, Julie Stewart Farschman, Daniel Stewart, and Amanda Stewart; and five grandchildren, Brian Denmark, Jennifer Stephan, Callie Denmark, Parker Farschman, and JB Stewart; along with his sister Anne Stewart Richards and many other family members and friends.
Born in 1933 into an Atlanta family, Fred was the grandchild of Dr. Joseph Stewart, past President of North Georgia College and son of Georgia educators Frederick and Florence Stewart. Fred was one of the smartest men we knew. He loved his family with all his heart and felt joy whenever the family gathered. He was a 1955 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Engineering, served honorably as an officer in the US Navy, and worked as a computer engineer with the highly regarded AT&T Bell Laboratories, retiring in 1989.
Fred was an original! There was never a dull moment when he was around. He was a lifelong learner with an innate curiosity for knowledge. He played the trumpet and bugle as a young man and classical guitar all his life. He was a ham radio operator and one of the original users of the internet. He enjoyed an eclectic library of music and books and played bridge with his wife and close friends almost every week until his death. He enjoyed learning bird calls and followed current events and tennis with great interest. Fred was a collector of great recipes and cooked meals from scratch with the finest of ingredients, enjoying the entire process of creating a meal to enjoy with others. Fred loved going to Hawaii and was able to take one last trip this year with his wife before returning home for the final battle. Fred leaves his family with so many loving memories of his frequently inappropriate one liners that always made family gatherings interesting. His family members were always secure in the knowledge that he loved them with all his heart, was proud of his children and grandchildren, and loved his wife Nancy - his best friend and caring companion in the last years of his life.
Fred supported the arts through his subscriptions to National Public Radio, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the National Wildlife Federation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the charity of your choice. The family will be receiving visitors at The Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076, on Thursday, May 22, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, May 23, at the Oxford Historical Cemetery in Oxford, Georgia, where his family plot is located.
Arrangements under the direction of Roswell Funeral Home, Roswell, GA.
