George William McCarthy III (Mac) was reunited with his Savior on September 5th, 2025, after a long battle with heart and kidney failure. Mac was a devoted husband to his beautiful wife Delaine and loving father to his only son George William McCarthy lV (Billy).
Mac was known for his kindness, humility, compassion, talent and love for Jesus. He will be remembered as a passionate member of the North Georgia German Shepherd Club, a gifted musician, a ham radio enthusiast and a loyal employee of Northside Tool Rental.
Mac was born in Durham, North Carolina at Duke Hospital June 21, 1945, and was raised along with his sister Jan George in Norfolk, Virginia, to parents George McCarthy, Jr., and Frances Eason McCarthy. Mac started playing guitar at the age of 10 and would practice until he played perfectly. Soon after, he began playing steel guitar with a local country band and the bass fiddle with his school orchestra. Mac extended his interests to ham radio and built his own radio at age 14. He learned morse code and communicated with people all over the world - at all hours of the day and night. His sister Jan still remembers his call letters K4ONL.
In high school, Mac continued his musical journey in the chorus while singing gospel music in church.
While pursuing a music degree at Tennessee Temple, Mac met his bride to be, Delaine Louise Tate and married her on June 11, 1965. Mac then began a career in radio at WDOD, a local Chattanooga radio station. The two lived on Signal Mountain, Tennessee, where their son Billy was born. A few years after his birth, and to be closer to family, they moved to Roswell, Georgia, where Mac started his 35-year career with Northside Tool Rental. During this time, Mac played string bass for weddings and events, restored tractors, built remote-control airplanes, grandfather clocks and was always tinkering on this project and that.
Mac and Delaine both shared a love for German Shepherds. Mac spent hours training shepherds for the club and even played Santa Claus for those wishing to have their family pictures (including dogs) with Santa. (Billy wasn’t actually an only child – he was just the only one who walked on two legs.)
He is survived by his wife Delaine Tate McCarthy of Roswell, Georgia, his son Billy McCarthy and wife Mary Lisa McCarthy of Dothan, Alabama and their four sons Nicholas (Laura Lee), William, Callahan and Charles Henry, his sister Jan Leigh George (Stephen), three nieces and six great nephews and one great niece.
A visitation service will be held Wednesday, September 10th, from 4:00 to 6:00pm with a graveside burial service on Thursday, September 11th at 11:00am at Green Lawn Cemetery at 950 Mansell Road in Roswell.
